Taylor Swift Is So Wrong—Charlie Puth Should Not Be A Bigger Artist, And Here Are 4 Reasons Why

Taylor Swift released her much-hyped 11th studio album on Friday and mentioned Charlie Puth on the title track, surprising millions. Her lyrics declare that Puth should be "a bigger artist," but there are four big reasons why we strongly disagree.

First, I'll say a few nice things about Charlie, just to get those out of the way. The 32-year-old singer-songwriter has won multiple Grammys, and he also has "perfect pitch," which means he can identify any musical note by name after hearing it, without reference to other notes. That's pretty cool.

But that's where the list of nice things about Charlie Puth ends, and the reasons why we don't like him begin. Let's go.

His Self-Inflicted Drama with Selena Gomez

Topping the list of reasons why Puth isn't a bigger artist is because of the shady way he treated Selena Gomez in 2016 after the pair collaborated on "We Don't Talk Anymore."

There were always rumors of a romance during their collab because of their "hot chemistry," but Gomez was dealing with very public drama with Justin Bieber at the time, and she denied that anything was going on with Puth.

However, about a year later, Puth released his hit song "Attention," which was about a ruthless woman who was stringing him along.

Fans immediately speculated that the song was about Gomez, and Puth confirmed it to Billboard in 2018. After insisting that he "doesn't kiss and tell," he changed his mind and decided to tell, and went on to share with the interviewer that "something real was going on behind the scenes [with Gomez]."

According to Puth, their alleged romance was "Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful." He added that "it really messed [him] up."

Gomez still claims that she and Puth never dated, but he painted a very different picture in that same Billboard interview.

"When I came up with ["Attention"] originally, I was on this hotel bed. In this really cool room in the Philippines. I was thinking back about the time I was in that hotel room, and she was literally crying to me about how mistreated she is by her ex and had me thinking that I could be the guy who could fix her."

"Like, girls are crazy," Puth continued. "They're amazing and crazy at the same time."

“I’m trying to put this the best way possible," he went on. "It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in – what I was getting myself into. We would be talking in the hotel, she’d be like, ‘You wanna sleep over? I’d be like, Yes, I’m gonna get it in! And then nothing would happen – which is totally fine, but after like the fifth time of that happening, I knew what she was doing. I knew that she was trying to make me so embedded to her that I would never leave her, but I would never get what I wanted out of her. She was doing that repetitively just to get something out of me, which was for me to be attached to her hip at all times."

Many fans were quick to point out the gross implications of his statements.

He also claimed in the interview that Gomez wore a specific perfume to stab him through the heart.

"She's wearing this very distinct perfume. It's almost like she wore it on purpose. It's the perfume that she wore when I first fell in love with her, and I've never fallen in love with anybody like that before. I came in with someone else who I was definitely having a nice time with, enjoying her company. But, like, [Selena] did it. She wore that perfume on purpose to f*ck me up. I saw it in her eyes."

'It sounds mean, but I just ditched the girl that I was with," Puth continued. "I was so enamored by this girl that I wanted everything. I knew it was over, but I just thought if I walked up to her something would ignite again."

Now I understand why Taylor gave him the shoutout because the lore is really giving pathetic "tortured poet" vibes.

He Seems To Like "Attention"

All that "Attention" gossip eventually died down until Puth himself stirred it back up again (four years later!) in 2023 when he randomly tweeted, "Attention is about what you think it’s about.”

By then, everyone knew the story behind the song, so he was literally just dredging up forgotten drama four years after the fact. I guess to get back at Gomez for rejecting him? Or just to get some publicity? Either way, it was weird and catty. And also cowardly, given that he almost instantly deleted it afterward. The masses were not impressed.

He's Weird About Sex

Besides sounding like a shallow jerk in that Billboard interview, he's made other public statements about his sex life that are equally cringe.

For starters, he says he lost his virginity to a random fan.

"This girl came up to me and was like, ‘Can you sign my chest?’ I was like, I feel like a rock star," he shared, although he added that he never saw her again and later regretted that the experience wasn't more "memorable."

Puth has also shared what song he masturbated to for the first time – a question no one was asking. "The first song I ever jerked off to was f*cking ‘This Love’ by Maroon 5,” he explained. “Now I’m good friends with Adam Levine. [I told him] and he was like, ‘That’s really weird.’”

Yeah, it is. And I'll let the fact that he's "good friends" with Adam Levine speak for itself.

Then there was that time he slid into "Summer House" star Hannah Berner's DMs the day before her bachelorette party. They weren't even following each other, but Charlie dropped in with a random "I like you" despite Berner being engaged (and now married) to Des Bishop.

He also went through a very public "thirst trap" phase on Instagram, so much so that his semi-nude pics have been carefully collected and curated by gay men.

He's Not Like Those Other Boys

Rounding out the list of reasons why we refuse to make Puth a bigger artist is his "I'm not like the other boys" persona. This one is more subjective than the others but doesn't this clip of him rambling on and on about how he doesn't care about his clothes because he's too busy making art just scream "pick me" but for dudes?

"It's a cool LA party," Puth describes. "It's full of dudes who look like they took six hours to figure out what kind of bomber they were going to wear, whereas I just walk in with like a shirt that I've been wearing for two days. Like, I wrote a good song in that shirt, and I wanted to write a good song two days later, so I just thought it would be a good idea to keep that shirt on. So I kept the same shirt on. And they're all like, 'Who's this kid with this half eyebrow coming into my rented house party with my rented Audi in front?' It's that type of sh*t."

There's also the part where he talks (a lot) about how it's so hard for him to have fun at these lame parties with these lame superficial dudes because his pitch is just too damn perfect and the girls are always hitting on him.

"I'm crazy. I have a perfect pitch, and I hear car horns, and I have to leave the party because I heard too many car horns. And this girl's hitting on me, and it stresses me out, and I keep hearing the car horns. And I'm thinking about a song that I made a couple of hours ago, and I'm comparing it to the key of the car horn, which is two notes together, and they're rubbing up against each other, and it's stressing me out. And she's giving me a drink, and it's too much to handle, so I have to go home and write a sad song."

I rest my case. Taylor Swift will not lull us into loving Charlie Puth with her satanic lullaby. The evidence against him is too strong.
