10 Dupes For Audrey’s Iconic “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” Lip Color
Who knew that I was going to descend into a rabbit hole while trying to find a good dupe for Audrey Hepburn's lipstick.
Audrey Hepburn is the style icon at the top of the list for so many. This definitely has to do everything with the little black dress, the stunning accessories, her fluttery lashes, immaculate hairstyle, and many other details about her.
And without delving into Audrey's biography, we all know that the woman was a force of nature who led a remarkable and charitable life from her early childhood, throughout her career, all the way to her untimely passing.
But what we are going to delve into today is that one moment in her most popular film that’s imprinted on history, and on Google images, and on the Facebook cover of every high school friend – the moment where Holly Golightly, dealing with a flutter of heartbreak, stops mid-conversation to apply her lipstick and says "a girl can't read that sort of thing without her lipstick."
The lipstick. But which lipstick is that exactly?
There are countless theories on the brand and the shade of the peachy, salmon-colored lipstick that caused such a stir among modern society, but there's one person who has the definitive answer – makeup artist Lisa Eldridge.
But don't get your hopes up because Lisa is certainly staying tight-lipped on this one, given that she was the successful bidder of Audrey's real-life Cartier lipstick holder that happened to have a little bit of the actual lipstick left inside.
Lisa (besides being the proud owner of Audrey's DNA) also knows what's the brand (and no, it's not the R brand, as she points out in this video), but since the shade is not being produced anymore, she decided to analyze the pigment and create her own limited edition lipstick.
Lisa named the shade “Go Lightly,” but unfortunately, it was only available for a couple of months, and while we hope it will come back soon, there isn't any information about it at the time of writing.
So with that out of the way, I began my search, hoping to find a modern-day dupe for obtaining the same look as Audrey, even if the formula isn't exact.
And since the search was unexpectedly long, I will make things easier for you and present you with a list of the best dupes that I found.
Revlon – Pink In The Afternoon
Contrary to popular belief, Revlon's “Pink In The Afternoon” isn't actually the shade Audrey Hepburn wore in her iconic cab ride scene, but it’s definitely one of the closest ones, which is why it found its way onto this list.
This pinky nude has a cream texture that's comfortable to wear, and it's quite a flattering shade for both warm and cool-toned complexions.
It has the slightest shift of salmon pink when swatched on the wrist, but it ultimately pays off quite rose-pink on the lips.
I read a blog post that says Revlon apparently confirmed Audrey wore their “Pink In The Afternoon” lipstick in Breakfast At Tiffany's; however, I couldn't find Revlon’s statement where they allegedly said that.
If that was the actual shade, then they've definitely tweaked it a little bit in recent years, most probably to preserve the authenticity. However, they still kept it as close to the original as possible so that it sells, and it works for them!
Apparently, Revlon's “Pink In The Afternoon” is quite difficult to find, and it’s not unusual for there to be a waiting list for it in stores.
Revlon – Dewy Peach
Revlon's Dewy Peach Super Lustrous Melting Glass Shine Lipstick (phew!) is a light-medium coral that leans towards pink and is perfect for warm undertones. It has a high-shine, glossy finish, and a semi-opaque coverage.
It applies smoothly and evenly across the lips and is also buildable if you want extra shine. You also don't have to worry that it will settle into the creases of your lips because it tends to fill them up quite nicely.
The only downside with the product, much like with any other gloss, is that it will definitely be a glue for anything you eat, so you will surely have to remove it and reapply it once you're done eating.
Urban Decay – Streak
Urban Decay “Streak” Vice Lipstick is a medium pink-coral with warm undertones and a rich, creamy finish.
The texture applies evenly and has a moderate slip with semi-opaque coverage. It will definitely last for over 4-5 hours if you don't eat or drink, but you will likely have to reapply after that.
The formula is also very hydrating as it contains soothing, nourishing, and softening ingredients, including aloe vera, jojoba, avocado, and babassu oils, as well as Illipe butter, which is an ingredient derived from Malaysian Illipe trees and provides long-lasting moisture to the delicate skin on the lips.
Burberry Kisses – First Blush No.28
Burberry’s Burberry Kisses Hydrating Lip Colour in “28 First Blush” is also one of the closest shades to Audrey's lipstick, right after their “57 Peach Delight,” which has unfortunately been discontinued.
“First Blush” is a true peachy, salmon-nude which is sheer and color-rich at the same time.
The formula is excellent for warm undertones and is long-lasting, creamy, and very hydrating to the lips.
Burberry Kisses – Golden Peach No. 69
Burberry’s Burberry Kisses Hydrating Lip Colour in “69 Golden Peach” is a brighter peach, unlike most muted tones on the list so far.
It’s an amazing summer lipstick that complements a beautiful, warm tan, but it also looks great on pale skin, especially if you’re looking to create a soft, peachy lip flush, in which case you will only need to lightly dab the product onto your lips instead of doing a full swipe.
However, due to its popularity, finding this lipstick is definitely a challenge.
Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G – Bitch Perfect
Charlotte Tilbury's Bitch Perfect Kissing Lipstick is a lightly muted, light-medium coral with a slight hint of pink and warm undertones and a little more of a sheen than satin finish like it's advertised.
However, there’s a downside to this lipstick, and although I didn't have an issue with this, I've read reviews that it can apparently be problematic for someone with very dry lips because it can settle in the creases. Therefore, bear in mind that you may need to exfoliate and prime your lips with a nourishing lip balm so that you can get the most out of this lipstick.
Other than that, it has a really nice color that will complement warm undertones.
Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipstick – Angel Alessandra
Charlotte Tilbury’s Angel Alessandra Kissing Lipstick is a brighter, peachy coral with warm undertones and a natural sheen.
It has a semi-opaque pigmentation that applies evenly and a non-drying formula that’s comfortable to wear and is hydrating to the lips.
However, the only downside is that it won't last long, and you will only have 2-3 hours before having to do a re-touch.
Brian + MW Lipstick – Passego Puro
The Passego Puro Lipstick is a high-shine lipstick in a peachy pink shade with a warm golden undertone that looks surprisingly good on both warm and cool undertones.
The formula is sheer but buildable, and it has a balmy, moisturizing texture that's incredibly comfortable to wear throughout the day.
It’s a perfect lipstick for a no-makeup day look because only one swipe will deliver the perfect amount of sheerness — just enough to give you a little bit of color without overwhelming the look.
Chantecaille Lip Chic – Daphne
Chantecaille Lip Chic in “Daphne” combines a high shine, plumping effect of a gloss with a rich, even coverage of a lipstick, and the combo is nothing short of magical.
It goes on with an incredibly soft and lightweight texture and helps moisturize and smooth the lips. A bonus ingredient is hyaluronic acid which helps attract moisture into the skin and leave it plump and hydrated.
The lipstick has a shiny finish, but the texture isn't sticky, and the color is a beautiful, demure pearlized pink that aims to give both warm and cool undertones a soft flush on the lips.
It’s truly a beautiful lipstick which is why it can be hard to find. No surprise there.
YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick – Corail Urbain
YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in “Corail Urbain” is a beautiful, moderately warm-toned lipstick with a soft, medium-dark coral pigment and a pearly finish.
It's highly pigmented and deposits a good amount with just one swipe. It also has a very luxurious feel and wears comfortably on the lips throughout the day.
Besides that, the formula also contains SPF 15 to protect your lips from overdrying and becoming damaged by the UV rays.
Closing Thoughts
We may not be lucky enough to have Audrey's original lipstick in our hands, but that doesn't mean we can't find a pretty decent dupe that will complement our complexion while still making us feel just a little bit like the icon herself.
