In honor of the birth of their second child in July 2022, here’s a breakdown of the timeline of Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s relationship.

October 2016: Joe and Sophie Meet

Like many, Joe was a fan of Sophie for her role as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones and decided to shoot his shot by sliding into her DMs on Instagram. The two eventually met in person in October 2016, but Sophie didn’t think that they would hit it off. In an interview with Elle, she said, “I expected him to show up with security and everything. I thought he would be such a d***. I took all my guy friends with me to meet him, because in the back of my mind I was worried he could be a catfish, or… I don’t know what. I just wanted my guy friends with me. I had my rugby boys. I was safe.”

She continued, “The best thing was that he didn’t bring security. He brought a friend, and they drank just as hard as the rest of us. I remember us two spending only a couple of minutes on the dance floor, and then we found a space in the far corner and we just talked. We talked for hours, and hours, and hours. And I wasn’t bored. It wasn’t contrived, it wasn’t small talk — it was just so easy. Soon, we were inseparable. And then I went on tour with him.”

Rumors began circulating that Joe and Sophie were an item after they were spotted spending time together in Europe, particularly at a Kings of Leon concert in the Netherlands. A witness told People, “They were really close together. I didn’t look very often because I was seated more in front of the room. The two or three times I was watching they were kissing. She was all smiley and he looked really sweet.”

December 2016: Joe and Sophie Confirm They’re Exclusive

After a few weeks of rumors, it was confirmed that Joe and Sophie were exclusively dating. A source told People, “They’re dating exclusively. He was playing the field, but he really likes her and is willing to settle down for her.” 

Joe was famous for dating several beautiful celebrities before meeting Sophie, making the confirmation that he was willing to settle down both groundbreaking and exciting for fans to watch.

January 2017: Joe and Sophie Make It Instagram Official

A month after their relationship was confirmed, Sophie took to Instagram to make the relationship official on social media. She posted a picture of Joe smoking a cigar on a boat, captioning the post, “Miami Daze."

October 2017: Joe Proposes to Sophie

After nearly a year of dating, Joe proposed to Sophie with a stunning pear-shaped diamond ring set on a beautiful double pave band. They announced the engagement by posting a picture of both of their hands, showing off Sophie’s ring. Joe captioned his photo, “She said yes,” and Sophie captioned hers, “I said yes.”

October 2018: Red Carpet Debut

Similar to Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger, Joe and Sophie waited until after they got engaged to make their red carpet debut. Joe and Sophie attended the Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week in October 2018, and Sophie posted an adorable picture of the couple at the event that she captioned, “With my love in Paris.”

March 2019: Sophie Opens Up about Her Depression

Sophie has been open about her issues with depression, but she shared how Joe helped her through it before the final season of Game of Thrones aired. She told Glamour UK, “I think for the longest time I didn’t have a real sense of myself. I had a bit of an identity crisis where I was playing all these people and I’d grown up faster than I probably should have done. I hadn’t been able to experience university, or just spend a lot of time with friends, so for a while, I kept thinking, ‘Who am I?’”

She continued, “A lot of [my happiness now] is to do with being with a person I’ve fallen in love with, who loves me more than he loves himself, and who wants to see me find my own happiness. That was probably the biggest thing that pushed me to find who I am – and find my happiness in things other than acting.”

On the Jonas Brothers album, Happiness Begins, Joe sings about helping Sophie through her issues in the song “Hesitate.” He sings, “I will take your pain / And put it on my heart / I won't hesitate / Just tell me where to start / I thank the oceans for giving me you / You saved me once and now I'll save you too / I won't hesitate for you.”

May 2019: Las Vegas Wedding

After the reunited Jonas Brothers performed at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Joe and Sophie surprised fans with an impromptu ceremony at the Chapel L’Amour inside the famous Little White Chapel. The wedding was live-streamed on Diplo’s Instagram account. The wedding was officiated by an Elvis impersonator and country duo Dan + Shay performed after the couple exchanged vows. The ceremony was small, but Joe’s brothers and bandmates Nick and Kevin were in attendance.

Sophie shared her memories of that evening with Elle UK, saying, “We went around inviting random people we’d met at the awards and were like, ‘You can come, you can come…’ It was so wild. So fun. So awesome!”

“I was gunning for Cardi B to walk me down the aisle,” she added (it didn't work out unfortunately).

June 2019: Their Official Wedding in France

A month after their unofficial Vegas ceremony, Joe and Sophie officially tied the knot in a formal ceremony at a chateau in France. Sophie looked amazing in a stunning ballgown made of silk, lace, and tulle designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton.

“I feel like the only thing that’s changed for me is having this incredible sense of security. Just the word husband and the word wife – it just solidifies the relationship,” Sophie told Elle on the topic of her marriage. “I love being married. I think it’s wonderful. I’m sure we’ll have our hiccups and our different things. But right now, it’s like the security and the safety is everything.”

2020: Joe and Sophie’s First Child Is Born

In February 2020, Us Weekly confirmed that Joe and Sophie were expecting their first child in the middle of summer.

Sophie gave birth in July 2020. A source told Entertainment Tonight, "Joe and Sophie welcomed a baby girl last Wednesday in L.A. and are over the moon. The couple is already obsessed and can't stop gloating about their new addition. The couple is taking time to enjoy this special moment and have only shared the news and updates with family and friends. With the pandemic, Joe and Sophie have been very cautious about who is around them and their little girl."

It was later confirmed that they named their baby girl Willa, and neither Joe nor Sophie has publicly shared photos of her on social media.

2022: Joe and Sophie’s Second Child Is Born

After some speculation, Sophie’s pregnancy with the couple’s second child was confirmed in March 2022 by In Touch. She showed off her baby bump alongside Joe at the 2022 Met Gala in May.

“It’s what life is about for me – raising the next generation,” Sophie told Elle UK during her pregnancy. “The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength. We’re so excited to be expanding the family. It’s the best blessing ever.”

Their second daughter was born on July 14, 2022. A rep told People, “Joe and Sophie are happy to announce the arrival of their baby girl.” Her name has yet to be announced, and we can’t help but admire how both Joe and Sophie make it a priority to keep their daughters out of the public eye so they can have normal lives away from the spotlight.
