A "Freaky Friday" Sequel Is Coming Soon, Featuring Lindsay Lohan And Jamie Lee Curtis
The cult classic is coming back for a sequel, and Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are reprising their original roles.
Freaky Friday first made its debut in 1976. The enduring popularity of this beloved classic, which has since been adapted for the screen multiple times, lies in its heartwarming story, memorable characters, and the universal themes of family, understanding, and personal growth. It was based on the novel of the same name by Mary Rodgers, starring Barbara Harris as Ellen Andrews and Jodie Foster as her daughter Annabel. The story centers on a mother and daughter who, after expressing a desire to switch lives for a day, magically swap bodies and are forced to navigate the challenges of each other's daily routines.
The film's timeless appeal has led to several adaptations over the years, each offering a fresh take on the classic story. In 1995, a television movie version of Freaky Friday starred Shelley Long as the mother and Gaby Hoffmann as the daughter. In 2003, a theatrical release starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan became an instant hit, introducing a new generation of viewers to the magic of the original film. This adaptation featured a modernized script and a memorable soundtrack, including the catchy song "Ultimate" performed by Lohan. In 2018, Disney Channel released a musical adaptation of Freaky Friday starring Heidi Blickenstaff and Cozi Zuehlsdorff, which showcased a new dimension of the story through song and dance. Freaky Friday has also made its way to the stage, with a musical theater adaptation debuting in 2016. The stage production, featuring a book by Bridget Carpenter and music by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, has enjoyed successful runs at regional theaters and high schools across the United States. And now it's back yet again, this time on the big screen as a sequel to the 2003 film that became a cult classic.
A Freaky Friday Sequel Is Coming Soon, Featuring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis
Disney has confirmed plans to revisit the world of the 2003 version of Freaky Friday. The sequel will see the return of original stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising their roles as a mother and daughter duo who wake up to find they have swapped bodies. Elyse Hollander is creating the script for the sequel. The original Freaky Friday grossed $160 million globally, and the popularity of the film led to numerous homages, including the Blumhouse horror film Freaky.
Jamie Lee Curtis revealed in a New York Times retrospective that she continued to receive questions about a potential Freaky Friday sequel, which inspired her to reach out to Disney about the possibility. "Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made,’” she said.
For Lohan, the sequel marks a return to studio filmmaking after making something of a comeback and focusing on projects such as the Netflix rom-com Falling for Christmas. She expressed enthusiasm about revisiting the film, stating, “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”
Fans are already going wild over the possibility of these two reuniting for a sequel. Many say nothing can top early 2000s Lindsay Lohan, and others are wondering if Chad Michael Murray will reprise his role as Lindsay's love interest. Others are a little skeptical that this sequel will be any good, considering the fact that Lindsay will probably be a mother and Jamie will be a grandmother. Even if it's a train wreck, surely there will be plenty of fans watching it unfold.
