All The Movies Coming To Theaters In 2024
From remakes like “Mean Girls the Musical” to originals like family-friendly “IF,” there are plenty of exciting films coming to theaters in 2024.
Thanks to Barbie’s and Oppenheimer’s record-breaking box office numbers, 2023 marked the official return of the movies. Everyone was tired of streaming on their couches – people wanted to watch movies in theaters again, with buttered popcorn and ice cold cola to mark the occasion!
Will 2024 bring even more cinematic greatness? It’s too early to tell, but from musicals to Marvel movies, there are a lot of exciting releases on the way. Some are must-sees, while others look like must-skips. Without further ado, here is a roundup of the most talked-about films coming to theaters in 2024.
Mean Girls
If you thought people talking about the new Mean Girls were referring to the OG actresses’ reunion in a Walmart commercial, think again. Mean Girls is back, but this time it’s a musical. You’ll recognize Tina Fey and Tim Meadows from the original, but newcomer Reneé Rapp is already rumored to steal the spotlight as chief bully Regina George. Mean Girls will be in theaters on January 12, 2024.
I.S.S.
I.S.S. stands for International Space Station, of course. In this thriller, conflict between the U.S. and Russia makes its way to the International Space Station as astronauts realize they must do or die. Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina star. I.S.S. will be in theaters on January 19, 2024.
Madame Web
The Spiderverse is continuing to expand with Madame Web. Marvel fans will surely already know these characters, but for the rest of us, the movie follows Cassie Webb, a clairvoyant paramedic whose future intertwines with three young women with special powers. Dakota Johnson plays Webb, and rising star Sydney Sweeney plays Spider-Woman (one of them, anyway). Madame Web will be in theaters on February 14, 2024.
Dune: Part Two
Dune: Part Two is the first but not the last multi-part film coming to theaters in 2024. I guess everyone hated on sequels so much that they’re rebranding? Fans of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Austin Butler are sure to line up to watch the space epic, even if they haven’t read the eponymous novel by Frank Herbert. Dune: Part Two hits theaters on March 1, 2024.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
When the elites talk about climate change, I don’t think they had the deadly global cooling of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in mind. Original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson do have parts in the film, but Paul Rudd and a team of newbies appear to do the majority of the ghostbusting in this sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be in theaters on March 29, 2024.
Mickey 17
South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite swept the 2020 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Now cinephiles are waiting impatiently for Mickey 17, his upcoming film about a cloned space explorer, played by Robert Pattinson. Mickey 17’s source material touches on many of the same themes, like class inequality, that Bong explored in Parasite. Mickey 17 will be in theaters on March 29, 2024.
Cabrini
Production company Angel Studios and director Alejandro Monteverde, the duo behind sleeper hit Sound of Freedom, have a new project that will be in theaters nationwide on March 8, 2024. Cabrini tells the story of Saint Francesca Cabrini, who left her native Italy for the U.S. to care for penniless immigrant children. Angel Studios announced in November that it has another faith-filled movie, Bonhoeffer, slated for 2024 release as well.
Challengers
Challengers, the upcoming tennis drama from director Luca Guadagnino, has taken the adage “sex sells” to heart. Almost all of the promotion around Challengers has centered on a scene that appears to put Zendaya in a threesome. Meanwhile, Guadagnino may be behind the times – a new report shows that Gen Z wants less sex on screen. Challengers will be in theaters on April 26, 2024.
The Fall Guy
Everyone’s favorite Ken, Ryan Gosling, is back in The Fall Guy. Gosling plays Colt, a stuntman who must deal with real bad guys and win back his ex-girlfriend Jody (Emily Blunt). The movie is based on a 1980s TV show – ask your parents if they remember it! The Fall Guy will be in theaters on May 3, 2024.
IF
IF stands for “imaginary friend” in John Krasinski’s upcoming family-oriented film. Krasinski also wrote the screenplay, which tells the story of a young girl who can see other people’s imaginary friends – even if no one has thought about them in years. This film is sure to be heartwarming and features lots of big names in voice and live action roles, including Ryan Reynolds, Matt Damon, and Krasinski’s wife Emily Blunt. IF will be in theaters on May 17, 2024.
Furiosa
Hollywood darling Anya Taylor-Joy trades her signature platinum tresses for an apocalyptic buzzcut in this Mad Max prequel. Moviegoers already met Imperator Furiosa in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, which featured Charlize Theron in the role. Furiosa also stars Chris Hemsworth, a.k.a. Thor. Furiosa will be in theaters on May 24, 2024.
Garfield
Lasagna loving cat Garfield finally gets his own full-length animated movie. Chris Pratt voices Garfield, and Samuel L. Jackson voices Garfield’s dad, Vic – yes, the movie explores Garfield’s origin story as well as his relationship with his human, Jon. Garfield will be in theaters on May 24, 2024.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth film in the Planet of the Apes reboot series. The first film in that installment, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, followed chimpanzee Caesar as he attempted to free his fellow apes from human bondage. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will take place several generations later, Variety reports. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be in theaters on May 24, 2024.
Ballerina
Ballerina is a John Wick spinoff featuring bombshell Ana de Armas. Don’t worry, it’s not a John Wick movie without John Wick – Keanu Reeves is starring as well. The franchise has already earned more than $800 million worldwide, Deadline reports. Ballerina will be in theaters on June 7, 2024.
Inside Out 2
Pixar’s Inside Out was a heartwarming family movie about 12-year-old Riley’s journey learning to balance her emotions – Joy, Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Sadness. Inside Out 2 introduces a new emotion, Anxiety, as Riley becomes a teenager. This isn’t the first time Pixar has tackled the topic of puberty in a film. But, it could be successful where 2022’s Turning Red failed by focusing on “the emotional aspects of puberty rather than the physical changes,” writes Lynn Sharpe at ScreenRant. Inside Out 2 will be in theaters on June 14, 2024.
A Quiet Place: Day One
A Quiet Place: Day One is the third installment in John Krasinski’s popular horror franchise, but it will be the first A Quiet Place film that he isn’t writing and directing himself. Actress Lupita Nyong'o will lead the alien invasion film, which moves the setting from the countryside to New York City. A Quiet Place: Day One will be in theaters on June 28, 2024.
Despicable Me 4
The family-friendly franchise that gave us Minions keeps expanding. Steve Carrell returns as the voice of soft-hearted supervillain Gru in Despicable Me 4. Universal Studios hasn’t released much information about the new film, but we do know that it will be in theaters on July 3, 2024.
Twisters
Twisters is an upcoming thriller where the villain is bad weather. Based on 1996’s Twister, Twisters will try to recreate the original’s box office success. Glen Powell, Kiernan Shipka, and Daisy Edgar-Jones are already attached to star, according to IMDb. Twisters will be in theaters on July 19, 2024.
Deadpool 3
Smartmouth superhero Deadpool/Wade Wilson is back for Deadpool 3. In a crossover exciting to all Marvel fans, Hugh Jackman will join the film as Wolverine, according to photos that leaked from set in December. Deadpool 3 will be in theaters on July 26, 2024.
Kraven the Hunter
If you can’t keep track of all the Marvel movies coming out in 2024, that’s okay, neither can I. Kraven the Hunter features heartthrob Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, a.k.a Kraven. With an R rating, the film will be darker than your average superhero film. Kraven the Hunter will be in theaters on August 30, 2024.
Joker: Folie à Deux
Dark and twisted, 2019’s Joker was extremely polarizing, and Joker: Folie à Deux will likely divide audiences again. Dangerously unhinged clown Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) finds himself locked in Arkham Asylum in this sequel starring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Director Todd Phillips has shared several photos of Phoenix and Lady Gaga in character amid speculations that the film is a musical. Joker: Folie à Deux will be in theaters on October 4, 2024.
Gladiator 2
Gladiator 2’s 2024 release seemed unlikely due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. However, the film will still be released on November 22, 2024, as filming resumed in Malta in December, Variety reports. If you’re a fan of the Russell Crowe original, you’ll be excited to hear that some of the actors from the 2000 version are returning, with the additions of Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington.
Wicked: Part One
Unfortunately for all involved, the film version of uber-popular musical Wicked has been overshadowed by personal drama. Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, and Ethan Slater, who plays Boq, have been accused of leaving their spouses for each other. However, I’m sure diehard musical theater fans will still flock to see Cynthia Erivo play Elphaba and Jeff Goldblum play The Wizard. Wicked will be in theaters on November 27, 2024, and Part Two of the film is expected in November 2025.
Nosferatu
More than 100 years after the original film was released, writer-director Robert Eggers will put his own spin on classic vampire tale Nosferatu. Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Bill Skarsgaard star. Nosferatu will be in theaters on December 25, 2024.
