The internet has found a new low – and, unfortunately, Aubrey Plaza and her deceased husband have become the target.

Plaza’s husband, Jeff Baena, the writer and director known for works like Life After Beth and The Little Hours, died by suicide at 47.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed Baena’s tragic death in early January. Plaza and Baena had been together since 2011, officially tying the knot in 2021 after a quick ceremony.

From Golden Globes to Grief

Plaza, who was scheduled to present at this year’s Golden Globes, understandably backed out of the event following Baena’s death. Director Brady Corbet, in an acceptance speech for The Brutalist, acknowledged the tragedy, saying, “Finally, tonight my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family.”

Men on X (formerly Twitter) decided to make fun of Baena’s death. Some users saw Baena’s death as an opportunity to crack distasteful jokes or make misogynistic comments.

One particularly repulsive tweet read, “Just found out Aubrey Plaza is single again!”

Another user, @Violentstorm_, called out this behavior in a post: “Her husband just killed himself and she's likely blaming herself for not getting him help and everyone is like ‘omg my turn she’s single now’ like stfu and have some f***ing decency.”

Aubrey Plaza Deactivates Instagram

As the insensitive comments continued, Plaza deleted her Instagram account. By January 13, her page displayed the following message: “Sorry, this page isn’t available.”

Baena’s career highlights include his directorial debut, Life After Beth, where Plaza starred, and Horse Girl, which he co-wrote with Alison Brie. Speaking about the latter in a Reddit AMA, Baena revealed that mental health was a driving force behind the film: “Alison and I both have had family members who have had mental illness, and it was a major influence on working on this.”

In a 2021 interview with People, Plaza reflected on how the pandemic had brought them closer: “We were quarantined for months and months like everybody else. And we did enjoy it. I think it was, obviously other than all of the catastrophic things happening in the world, just on a personal level, relationship level, was kind of nice to just be forced to be in one place for that long.”

Plaza and Baena’s family released a statement asking for privacy, calling this an “unimaginable tragedy.”
