Bella Hadid, a renowned supermodel, has been conspicuously absent from the modeling scene for a while. She recently opened up on Instagram about her intense battle with Lyme disease, a condition that has caused her "invisible suffering." Through a series of photos, she showcased her medical treatments and documented her journey, revealing the struggles she's been grappling with while attempting to maintain her demanding career.

Bella Hadid Reveals She's Been Battling Lyme Disease

Hadid's posts include both pictures of her medical papers and raw images of her receiving medical treatment. Despite being surrounded by privileges, opportunities, and love, she mentioned the immense confusion she felt due to being simultaneously sick and sad. Yet, Hadid remains optimistic, reassuring her followers of her well-being and saying she would undergo it all again if it brought her to her present state of health.

Lyme disease is an infectious condition caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Hundreds of thousands of Lyme disease cases are reported annually, primarily in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The CDC estimates around 300,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year.

Early signs (3-30 days post-tick bite) include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches. A characteristic symptom is a circular, red rash with a central clearing, resembling a "bull's-eye." If untreated, symptoms can progress to joint pain, heart palpitations, facial palsy, and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Early detection is key. Lyme disease is usually treated with antibiotics. Doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime are typically prescribed for early-stage Lyme disease, while intravenous antibiotics might be used for more complicated cases. Avoiding tick-infested areas, using repellents, performing regular tick checks, and promptly removing attached ticks reduce the risk of Lyme disease.

Interestingly, Bella is not the only member of her family affected by Lyme disease. Her mother, Yolanda, and younger brother, Anwar, also suffer from the same ailment. Drawing strength from her journey, Hadid believes her struggles have shaped her into the person she is today. She expressed her gratitude for the newfound perspective on life she has gained from over 100 days of treatment and nearly 15 years of battling the disease invisibly. Bella encourages those who are struggling, emphasizing that things will improve, urging them to remain resilient and have faith in their journey.

"Living in this state, worsening with time and work while trying to make myself, my family and the people who support me, proud, had taken a toll on me in ways I can’t really explain," she wrote in the caption. "To be that sad and sick with the most blessings/privilege/opportunity/love around me was quite possibly the most confusing thing ever. one thing I want to express to you all is that 1: I am okay and you do not have to worry, ♥️and 2:I wouldn’t change anything for the world. If I had to go through all of this again, to get here, to this exact moment I’m in right now, with all of you, finally healthy, I would do it all again. It made me who I am today. [sic]"

She thanked the companies she's worked with for their patience, her followers for their consistent support, her agents Jill and Joseph for their protection, and her medical team for their unwavering assistance.

In her posts, she also highlighted the positivity she's trying to maintain. To highlight this, she chose the most uplifting pictures from her treatment journey, emphasizing that despite the pain, the experience was enlightening and brought her new friends and perspectives. Hadid concluded her message by promising her followers that she will return when she feels ready.
