Blake Lively Releases Hair Care Brand Blake Brown
Want Blake Lively's long, healthy locks? Here’s how she achieves and maintains her gorgeous hair.
Blake Lively is jumping on the celebrity brand train, and we’re here for it!
The mom of four can rock any hair color, but it’s her golden, luscious locks that we all know and love. The real question is, how do we achieve that effortless, red-carpet-ready look that Lively pulls off so flawlessly?
Introducing Blake Brown, Lively's new haircare line that took her seven years to perfect. The Gossip Girl star's reasoning behind the launch is simple: She loves hair. "The same reason that I love this line, or the idea of this business, is the same reason I'm a foodie," she told Real Simple. "You have to eat and you have to drink water so you may as well make this necessity something that is an elevated experience and something that's joyful – that's where the fragrance element comes in. I was always interested in hair; hair is something that if I'm not dressed or I don't wear makeup, if I tend to have something make me feel like me, or feel more done up, it tends to be my hair. Hair was always a very important thing to me."
How is it that Lively has worn numerous hair colors – red, blonde, brunette – in the past two decades yet still has those luscious locks? She says two things are important when it comes to maintaining healthy hair: strength and elasticity. "So protein equates [to] strength, and you need elasticity so that if you brush it, it won't snap. So they said you want to go between a protein, strengthening shampoo and a nourishing, moisturizing one that gives you elasticity," she continued, adding that she learned about masks.
"So I started using masks almost 20 years ago now; I don't ever use conditioner. So when people are like, 'how do you have great hair?' It's like, I use a different hair system than my family is asking. I wanted to replicate the systems and the patterns that I already love. I use masks every shampoo. You can do it to your hair type – you can use just a little of the mask or I tend to use a bit more," Lively added. She also never puts the mask above her roots since her hair gets oily. "I just listen to my hair."
If your hair needs "a little more love," leave a mask in and wear a ballerina bun for a few days.
You're probably wondering how much Lively's products cost. Don't worry, they won't break the bank compared to other celebrity products. The shampoo and masks in the collection include the Wild Nectar Santal Fundamental Nourishing Shampoo ($19), Wild Nectar Santal Fundamental Nourishing Mask ($20), Sandalwood Vanille Fundamental Strengthening Shampoo ($19), and Sandalwood Vanille Fundamental Strengthening Mask ($20). Not bad for high-quality shampoos and conditioners.
I'm typically skeptical of Hollywood brands, but Lively is doing a great job of convincing me. Given how she dedicated nearly seven years to this, I'd wager she cares a lot more than we think. "I wanted to make them smell like smells I would want to wear, make them at a more accessible price point, and I wanted them – and the packaging – to be clean," she explained.
"And first and foremost, performance; it has to be great haircare. So that's why it took seven years. And price point – I want to try and make it work across as many people as possible so I've been testing it for seven years on my family and friends. It took a really long time to get it right and at that price point. But here we are and I couldn't be more proud of it."
Lively says it's important to give to your hair, and we agree. "My friends who really struggle with their hair; it's like you're only taking from it and the only time you give back is when you go to the salon or do a mask once or twice a month," she said. "You can't keep taking from something without replenishing the well. I mean, I guess that kind of goes for everything in life, right?"
