The internet hails Anya Taylor-Joy because her husband, Malcolm McRae, reportedly took her last name. I have seen the viral TikToks celebrating Taylor-Joy and the women calling her a "queen" for her and McRae's decision. The problem is...it's just a rumor. There is no evidence that McRae took The Queen's Gambit star's surname, and the first person to make the announcement was a fan account (@anyafolders) that tweeted, "Anya Taylor-Joy’s husband, Malcolm, took her last name."
That same fan who made the claim followed up with a popular meme that reads, "Leaves the scene after spreading misinformation."
However, thousands already took the tweet as fact. The original post garnered 18 million impressions and 73,000 likes. Most X users in the comment section echo each other: "As. She. Should. Proud of her. Bravo. Absolutely yes, and amen," writes @KratosMommy666.
"Gotta respect their choice!" adds @OneUniversality. "Good for them!!!" Again, there are no sources online (at least none that I've seen) that prove McRae's full name is now Malcolm Taylor-Joy – but the fact that the unfounded news went viral is hilarious (and concerning, honestly).
Who Is Malcolm McRae?
So, who is this lucky man? McRae is a 28-year-old talented musician who plays the “guitar and piano” and sings “pop, folk, rockabilly, rock and musical theatre." He's also an actor like his wife. According to his IMDB page, McRae was "discovered" at a talent competition among 1,000 other hopeful actors at age 12 "where he won Over All Young Actor, 2006." He starred in an award-winning short film Brotherly and was recognized for his "outstanding performance by a minor."
The duo was first spotted in public in 2021 when they were photographed making out. The PDA-fueled day they shared sparked dating rumors for months, but they didn't debut as a couple until March 2022 at the CAA Pre-Oscar Party in Hollywood.
They got hitched in an intimate courthouse ceremony in July 2022. This weekend, the Anglo-Argentinian actress and McRae tied the knot again at a dreamy and romantic ceremony in Venice, Italy.
On September 29, sources close to McRae and Taylor-Joy said, “Anya and Malcolm are incredibly private and wanted to ensure their wedding was kept away from prying eyes. They both love Italy and always dreamed of tying the knot in a beautiful setting surrounded by their nearest and dearest. There will be no expense spared, and their guests are bound to have an incredible time.”
The lovebirds may seem private about their love life, but they're obviously head-over-heels for each other. Taylor-Joy opened up about her husband last year when speaking to British Vogue. "I said to my partner [McRae] the other day that he was my hobby,” she said. “I see reading as something that I have to do. He loved it because he’s the same. I’ve finally found someone who will happily sit in silence with me reading. We’re basically 80 years old and seven at the same time, and it works really well.”
