Did Jay-Z "Groom" Beyoncé When She Was 16? These Are The Craziest Theories About The Power Couple
Social media users are convinced that Jay-Z and Beyoncé's relationship began when she was only a minor. The rapper is currently facing accusations of raping a 13-year-old.
Over the past week, allegations have linked Jay-Z to predatory behavior. A viral thread from X (formerly Twitter) by user @missfacto brought attention to his eerie history with Beyoncé.
“So I went down the rabbit hole with the whole Jay-Z and Diddy thing going on,” wrote @missfacto in her thread. From there, she detailed various moments from Jay-Z’s career and personal life.
One of the standout claims in the thread highlights a 2007 interview where Jay-Z admitted to first meeting Beyoncé when she was only 16 years old. A photo from 1998 of Destiny's Child and Jay-Z is circulating online, as it appears to prove that Beyoncé was around 16 or 17 when she met Jay-Z.
Beyoncé previously stated in a 2008 Seventeen magazine interview that she was 19 when their relationship began, while Jay-Z was 30 or 31. However, social media users still feel that she was "groomed."
Questionable Lyrics and Allegations of Grooming
In one song Jay-Z collaborated on with Pharrell, he seemingly raps about grooming a 19-year-old girl. Though the lyrics don’t explicitly name Beyoncé, fans have long speculated that the verse is about her. The lyrics of their song "Young Girl" are as follows: "Hov' got a young girl / Still not quite 21 / So high strung, such a vibrant thing / I introduce myself, 'Hi, Miss Thing' / You're 19? No, you're lightning in a bottle I give you a ring."
The viral X thread links Jay-Z’s past associations to other young women in the industry, including Aaliyah and Foxy Brown. Both women were teenagers when they worked with the rapper. Foxy Brown was just 15 when she began collaborating with Jay-Z. Others are pointing out how Aaliyah allegedly underwent abuse as a young woman, which you can read more about here.
Connections to Diddy
The allegations don’t stop at Jay-Z. People can't help but draw parallels between his behavior and the ongoing legal troubles facing his friend, Diddy. We all know how the mogul has been accused of sexual assault and abuse in multiple lawsuits. This has led some to question whether powerful men in the music industry have long used their influence to exploit younger women. While Jay-Z has denied all allegations against him, including a suit that accuses him of raping a 13-year-old with Diddy, people are still skeptical.
Another particularly damning accusation in the thread points out Jay-Z’s continued collaboration with R. Kelly in the early 2000s, despite the public knowledge of Kelly’s predatory behavior. Rapper Nas once alleged in an interview that Jay-Z knew minors were present in R. Kelly’s studio but turned a blind eye.
Beyoncé’s Role
Fans have also zeroed in on Beyoncé’s statements about their relationship. In multiple interviews, she’s described Jay-Z as a guiding force who helped shape her career. While that’s often been framed as a testament to their marriage and loving relationship, fans can't help but wonder: Is it actually an imbalance of power dynamics?
Incidents from their relationship have added fuel to the fire. In one example shared by rapper Bun B during an interview, Jay-Z allegedly called the set of Beyoncé’s “Check On It” music video and demanded all the men leave. "Jay Z also refused to let Beyoncé perform with Sean Paul at the VMAs, being the only man on stage with B," added @missfacto. To me, it sounds like Jay-Z is incredibly possessive of Beyoncé.
Jay-Z continues to deny all allegations against him.
