Elon Musk Announces New Twitter Feature That Allows Content Creators To Collect Email Addresses Of Their Subscribers
This development sets Twitter apart from all other social media sites and ensures that content creators have access to their subscribers even if they choose to leave the platform.
In what seems to be a defining moment for social media, the maverick entrepreneur Elon Musk acquired Twitter, triggering mixed reactions and speculation about the platform's future. Musk, famous for his candid and often controversial use of the platform, purchased Twitter for a whopping $44 billion. In October 2022, Musk was seen strolling into Twitter headquarters armed with a kitchen sink, an event he humorously tweeted about, adding "Entering Twitter HQ - let that sink in!" This tweet garnered over 1.3 million likes and 175,000 retweets, reflecting the intense public interest in this monumental changeover.
Despite an initial setback, when Musk nearly pulled out of the deal after discovering many Twitter accounts were merely bots, legal actions compelled him to proceed. Since then, he has been proactively engaging with his audience, already receiving numerous requests to tackle prevalent issues like shadow banning and inconsistent algorithms. However, Musk's transitional takeover ruffled some feathers. High-profile Twitter users, particularly among celebrities, announced plans to leave the platform in protest of Musk's takeover. Regardless of how many of these celebrities actually followed through with their threat, Musk has in fact made Twitter the best free speech platform online right now; additionally, he has made the site a friendly place for content creators.
Elon Musk Announces New Twitter Feature That Allows Content Creators To Collect Email Addresses of Their Subscribers
Just last week, Musk stepped in to ensure that Daily Wire's What Is a Woman? had full visibility on Twitter after the documentary was suppressed and throttled to the point where people couldn't even share it. Musk personally tweeted in response to Matt Walsh and even pinned the film to the top of his page to help people see it after the censorship issue was resolved. Musk also freed many people from a permanent ban from Twitter once he took over, including former President Donald Trump, various conservative commentators such as John Doyle, and Covid dissenters like Dr. Simon Goddek.
In another move to make Twitter more friendly to content creators, Musk announced that people can now collect email addresses of subscribers so that they can keep this information if they choose to leave the platform. This may not sound like a big deal, but it's a huge step forward for influencers and content creators, ensuring that they maintain control over their own audience, even in cases of unfair censorship.
"This platform will provide email addresses of subscribers (who opt in) to content creators, so that creators are able to leave this platform easily & take their subscribers with them if they want," he tweeted on Tuesday.
The subscriber option was recently added to Twitter, which allows users to follow their favorite content creators more closely by signing up for a subscription. And if these subscribers choose to share their email, Twitter creators will have access to all this information; they can even take these emails with them if they need to leave the platform for whatever reason. The reason this is so groundbreaking for a social media site is because, at any point, content creators can have their profile permanently nuked in the blink of an eye—without any explanation. This has been a problem for many creators on YouTube, Instagram, and especially TikTok. We now live in an age where content creators make a living off posting content. They pay their bills by gaining followers and subscribers, and establishing a loyal audience. But on social media, if your profile is completely wiped out for some reason, your followers are gone. You have no way to contact them and tell them what platform you'll be switching to. That all changes on Twitter now.
Musk has ensured that every content creator has a list of contact information from the subscribers who choose to provide it for them. So if there ever comes a time when they either want to leave the platform or they loose access to their profile, they still have all the emails of their subscribers that they can take with them to whatever platform they go to next. It's a small change, but it has a big impact on the way people will be able to use Twitter.
Musk has made it clear from the beginning that he won't run Twitter the same way that other popular social media apps are run. After he was sitting at the helm of the company, Musk publicly claimed that Twitter has "interfered in elections," and promised a more transparent and fair platform under his leadership. This statement opened up a Pandora's box of questions. The claim, if true, brings under scrutiny years of Twitter's operations and their implications on global politics. While Musk has yet to elaborate on his statement, it is evident that his leadership will be vastly different from his predecessors'.
Twitter's censorship controversies, such as the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop scandal during the 2020 election cycle, have raised questions about its role as a neutral platform. With Musk's takeover, there is renewed hope that the platform might become a more open and honest space for citizen journalism.
Furthermore, Musk has established that Twitter will not be a place where child sex abuse content is tolerated. Recently, a user tried to create a flag for MAPs (minor-attracted persons)—in other words, for pedophiles. This was meant to be a way to affirm pedophiles and their so-called sexual orientation. Within hours, the whole account was wiped from Twitter. Musk tweeted, "Not tolerated on this platform." Many people celebrated his no-nonsense approach to protecting children, which is a stark departure from what we've seen on platforms like Facebook and TikTok.
Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter is undeniably a landmark moment in social media history. As he continues to run the company in his own unique way, it seems as though Twitter will become the best free speech platform and also the most useful for content creators to maintain their independent business.
