Elon Musk Responds To AOC's Claim That He Changed X's Algorithm To "Interfere" With Elections
At a recent classified briefing attended by officials from the Biden Justice Department, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a wild claim against Elon Musk, accusing him of "election interference" during the 2022 midterms by manipulating the algorithms on X.
Tucker Carlson pointed out that her accusation has interesting timing given that anti-TikTok legislation is currently being debated by Congress that would allow the federal government to force the sale of any social media platform that "interferes" in elections.
"Just so you know what’s coming in 2025," Carlson added.
Musk's Response To AOC's Claim
Musk responded to Carlson's tweet, writing, "Actually, I made the algorithm open source and neutral to all parties, but of course that *is* “election interference” by her standards."
To date, no other social media platforms have made similar changes, so Musk is actually currently doing the most in terms of fostering transparency and neutrality when it comes to the X algorithm versus other social media companies.
X users were quick to point out the irony in AOC's debunked claims.
"If you're not actively helping the Democrats win elections, you're "interfering" in elections. That's where we are in 2024," wrote Vince Langman.
Clandestine added, "Seems like a shift to the “right” because the algos in place were batsh*t crazy and favored the left. We couldn’t even say “illegal immigrant” on here. All [Musk] did was level the playing field."
This is all unfolding against the backdrop of proposed anti-TikTok legislation, which has serious implications for censorship government overreach. The legislation under debate would empower the federal government to force the sale of any social media platform deemed to interfere in elections, setting a precedent for future regulatory actions that would almost certainly used to silence dissenting voices.
