R&B singer-songwriter Ciara has been in the music industry for many years and her most famous singles include "One, Two Step" and "Lose Control." She was born in Texas and grew up in several different states, including Georgia, Utah, New York, and Arizona. Ciara now has more than 33 million followers on Instagram and is one of the most well-known names in hip-hop. She teased her new upcoming single on Instagram, but it didn't quite get the reaction that she might have been expecting. The song's lyrics are largely about women being independent and refusing to rely on men for anything, but people say there's a disconnect here. Ciara is seemingly happily married and has three children.

On Monday, Ciara posted a reel on her Instagram with the caption, "This for all Da Girls that's in love with they self This for all Da Girls that done did it by they self -My Forever Letter to Myself- [sic]." The video is a compilation of photos and videos from her career and she shared a clip of her upcoming single called "For Da Girls." However, when fans listen to the lyrics, they can't help but notice that this is an anthem for independent girls who don't need men—and that seems to be very different than the lifestyle Ciara has made for herself.

"Get that money, sis... I'm way too fine to be inside. I'm outside. I'm doing my own sh*t, booking my own trips... I'm gorgeous. I'm important," Ciara sings in the song. “This is for the girls getting money. This is for the girls that don’t need no man. This is for the girls whose in love with they-self. This for all the girls who done did it by theyself."

She also shares photos of herself pregnant and with her three children. In 2013, Ciara got engaged to rapper Future and they welcomed a son together in 2014. However, they broke up in August 2014 because of his infidelity. In early 2015, Ciara started dating NFL player Russell Wilson and they announced their engagement in 2016. The couple waited to have sex until they got married on July 6, 2016. They have two children together. Ciara has been open about her Christian faith and often shares photos and videos of how happy she is with her husband and children.

Many people are criticizing Ciara for living out a happy family life while encouraging her female audience to be independent and love themselves because they don't need a man.

TikToker @his_daughter_7 says that black women have been desensitized to hearing these songs that encourage independence and the single lifestyle; meanwhile, Ciara goes home to her multi-millionaire husband every evening, who provides for her greatly. She also points out that black women in the US are the most likely racial group to be single moms and have children out of wedlock. This of course has tremendous impacts on how the children will turn out; kids who grow up without a father in the home are much more likely to commit crimes, go to prison, drop out of high school, be addicted to drugs, and live in poverty.

There are some fans of Ciara who are supporting her and explaining that this song is dedicated to her when she was younger and a single mom before she met her current husband. They claim that this song will help single mothers feel confident while they look for a husband who will help them raise a family. However, the lyrics are pretty clear: "This is for the girls that don’t need no man. This is for the girls whose in love with they-self." These types of songs have a bigger impact on our culture than we sometimes like to admit.
