Guy On Airplane Is Caught Allegedly Cheating On Camera, Gets Doxxed
A viral TikTok video showing a man reportedly cheating on a flight leads to his family being doxxed, sparking debates on the ethics of exposing cheaters.
On June 24, TikTok user @carolinerened shared a video of a man in a green shirt getting chummy with the woman beside him. According to the uploader, the man has an 8-year-old daughter who danced for the Astros opening night. @carolinerened asked her audience to find the wife, and as expected, they listened.
Soon after, the audience began commenting that his name was Lynn (unconfirmed) and that they had found the wife. I won't list the wife's name here to protect her privacy.
The uploader wrote in the caption, "If this man is your husband flying @United Airlines, flight 2140, from Houston to New York, he's probably going to be staying with Katy tonight. Him and Katy met at the airport bar and haven't left each others [side] since then." She added that the man's daughter danced for the Astros opening night, that he's from Fort Worth, is a surfer, and is reportedly the president of a company.
In a second video, the uploader took a photo of the man's and the woman's empty seats, claiming they had run off to the bathroom.
According to internet sleuths, the alleged cheater deleted his Facebook and other social media profiles. Whether or not the audience succeeded in alerting his wife remains unknown, but nevertheless, two people got doxxed. Now, the internet is debating whether or not exposing infidelity is ethical. "This is psychotic behavior. It is actually not normal or 'accountability reporting' to spy on strangers and try to expose them to loved ones," wrote @Louis Peitzman on X/Twitter.
@bentleyliz2 added in the comment section, "i love that its done under the guise of being a girls girl (im looking into making that phrase illegal, watch this space) but its most likely just going to humiliate his wife."
"I don't agree with cheating obviously but this panopticon behaviour is f*cking deeply uncomfortable to me. Surveilling and reporting on strangers leads nowhere good," added @Oh_Deer_Diner.
Someone else tweeted, "i luv a good ‘catch the cheater’ moment, but we gotta stop making videos like this bc it escalates situations, puts people in danger, and things get taken out of context. people are gonna be scared to have convos in public in fear that it’s being recorded and blasted on tiktok."
However, it seems that more people are siding with the uploader. "Men of the internet are crying because this cheating man got exposed, citing privacy concerns of his family & worries that he could lose his job," wrote @carolinecwilder. "Dude should have thought about that before he courted a stranger from the airport bar to the Mile High Club with his wedding ring on."
If the man is indeed married, then it's great a cheater was caught...but it came at the cost of his family's well-being and privacy. These are private matters that no one would want to air out. His wife may now have to deal with the millions of eyes preying on her private life. I also saw comments of people finding what show his daughter danced at, which could potentially place her in dangerous situations.
And, as other commentators have stated, we've normalized community surveillance to the degree that we're now engaging in behaviors that can have serious unintended consequences. Holding individuals accountable for their actions is important, yes, and I'm by no means siding with a cheater. But in the rush to expose wrongdoing, we risk violating privacy and endangering innocent parties.
