In a move that feels like a sharp pivot from Hollywood’s cancel culture playbook, HBO has defended J.K. Rowling’s stance on trans issues. The author of the Harry Potter series has been working with the company for the upcoming long-form TV reboot of her beloved books. HBO’s leadership, per Variety, is standing firm in their decision to keep Rowling on board despite the outrage.

On November 12, the network’s chief Casey Bloys told reporters that Rowling was “very, very involved in the process selecting the writer and the director,” and her statements on transpeople “haven’t affected the casting or hiring of writers or productions staff” for the show. Another spokesperson said in a statement to the outlet that its parent company has “been working with J.K. Rowling and in the Harry Potter business for over 20 years” and “her contribution has been invaluable.”

“We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter – the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance,” their statement said. “J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

The decision has predictably caused outrage on social media. On X (formerly Twitter), user @4utumnHarvest lamented, “There has been a noticeable anti-trans shift in companies in past two weeks and it’s honestly horrifying.”

Meanwhile, others applauded HBO’s stance. “Let’s call it pro-normal instead of this anti stuff,” wrote user @mdrn_cnservativ. “It’s time to normalize normal again.”

Rowling herself has repeatedly stated that her views are rooted in women’s safety and rights, not hatred or transphobia. She supports adults making decisions about their lives but strongly argues against policies she feels harm women or children, like allowing biological men to be in women's prisons or shelters. Rowling is advocating for women’s safety, and the fact that liberals send her death threats over that is horrific.

A New Leaf?

HBO’s decision to back Rowling feels like a huge shift. Is it possible that companies will move away from the ostracization of controversial figures?

Whether this signals a new leaf or a bold bet on Rowling’s star power and authority, the reaction has been predictably volatile. Only time will tell if the Harry Potter reboot can recapture the magic while amidst the online backlash. One thing is clear, though: Love it or hate it, J.K. Rowling is still very much on good terms with HBO, and she's not going anywhere.
