“Here’s how the LA fires, Heidi and Spencer, and this number one song are all connected,” says pop-culture commentator Sammy Cohen in her Instagram video.

She reminded us of Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, the infamous duo from The Hills who recently lost their home to the California wildfires. If you watched the hit show in the 2000s, you most likely remember them as the “reality TV villains.”

Pratt, who’s apparently big on hummingbirds and crystals these days, filmed a video on his balcony before evacuating. And instead of disappearing into privacy like most would, he hopped on TikTok to share his family’s loss. Amid the devastation, Pratt decided to somehow make light of the situation. In one of his TikToks, he asked followers to stream his wife’s Superficial album – yep, the same one that absolutely flopped when it dropped in 2010. “Please stream any of [Heidi Montag’s] music on any platforms; it will make a huge difference,” he captioned a TikTok that showed the ruins of their home.

A Flop Becomes Fire

Who even remembers (or knows) Superficial? I didn’t even know Montag had an album. Being the true lover boy Pratt is, he kept the updates coming as the album slowly climbed the iTunes charts. Celebrities like Flava Flav and Emily Ratajkowski joined the movement, hyping up their followers to stream the album. By Saturday, Montag’s album dethroned none other than Bad Bunny, landing at No. 1 on iTunes.

In Cohen’s commentary, she explains, “The community is rallying around him and his family. And now that Heidi and Spencer fans have delivered, Heidi's music just hit the number one spot on the iTunes chart.” Only TikTok has the power to turn a niche old album to a full-blown campaign that dethrones global superstars. It’s unfortunate that it may be on its way out.

Shortly after the iTunes victory, he took to Instagram with a video and announced, “Popstar Heidi Montag No. 1 on iTunes America. Thank you, everyone! he said, adding "I don't even care if it goes away in five minutes. I got this screenshot." In a follow-up TikTok, he rallied fans to take the album to Billboard, saying, “We need radio play, I guess, not just iTunes to get No. 1 on Billboard charts, which is the ultimate goal. Cause then it’s like, that a wrap, Heidi is the biggest superstar in the world.”

Montag’s Superficial was dismissed as a vanity project when it was released. Now, 15 years later, thanks to the digital hustle of a husband who refused to quit, Montag receives her flowers, and her family is supported.

As commentator Cohen put it, “There’s nothing like a good comeback story.”
