Abby Choi, a 28-year-old model and influencer from Hong Kong, was reported missing on February 22, 2023. The discovered remains, believed to be Choi’s, were found in a building rented by her former father-in-law, Kwong Kau. Her ex-husband, Alex Kwong, 28, and his family members have been arrested and charged with crimes connected to her brutal murder. Choi was allegedly killed over a financial dispute involving a multi-million dollar property with her ex-husband Kwong and his family.

Here are the details surrounding this tragic story.

Who Is Abby Choi?

Abby Choi, a style icon and socialite, loved designer clothes and had 100,000 followers on Instagram. She came from a wealthy family, and she regularly attended fashion shows, with her most recent one being Paris Fashion Week. Choi has been featured in numerous magazines and was dubbed "one of the most sought-after influencers in the industry" this month by L'Officiel Monaco.

Choi was a mother of four. The influencer allegedly married Alex Kwong when she was only 18 and had two children with him, now aged 8 and 10. She divorced Kwong after four years and married her current husband, Chris Tam, and they welcomed two kids together.

Abby Choi Goes Missing, Remains Are Found

The model was reported missing last week, one day after she and her former brother-in-law – Anthony Kwong – failed to pick up her 8-year-old daughter from school. The investigations led officials to a three-story house in Tai Po district said to be rented by Choi's former father-in-law, Kwong Kau. Police also found Choi's ID and credit cards on the ground floor, along with dismembered body parts in a refrigerator, all believed to be Choi’s. On Sunday, authorities discovered a skull and multiple ribs in a soup pot with vegetables and fat. The influencer's torso and hands are still missing. Additionally, a meat grinder, an electric saw, face shields, and other clothing were found on the site.

Officials believe Choi was brutally attacked in a seven-seater van. They now allege that she received a fatal blow to her head since the skull found had a hole on the right side. The search for Choi's remaining body parts continued at a landfill in Ta Kwu Ling, Hong Kong. Police superintendent Alan Chung told reporters, "The suspects threw away several bags of important evidence in the morning of 22 February." He continued, "There may be some human body parts, or they could be the clothes and phone of the victim – or even the weapons."

Choi's Ex-Husband and His Relatives Are Charged with Murder

Alex Kwong was arrested while attempting to flee the city by boat. His father, Kwong Kau, and his brother Anthony have been charged with the murder of Abby Choi. Kwong's mother, Jenny Li, currently faces one count of perverting the court of justice, as stated by NPR. The four have been placed in custody and were denied bail.

Choi Had Alleged Financial Disputes with Her Former Husband and His Family

Detectives suspect Choi was embroiled in financial disputes with her former husband and his family. "We believe the victim and her ex-husband’s family had many financial disputes involving huge sums,” Chung said. He added, “Someone was dissatisfied with how the victim handled her assets, which became a motive to kill."

Police investigations found that Choi's relationship with her ex-husband and his family "went sour" when she decided to sell the $9 million dollar property she bought for them. Choi still promised to house them elsewhere but faced backlash from her former father-in-law, a retired police officer. Officials discovered that Choi did not register her new marriage to Chris Tam, meaning her assets would go to Kwong and his kids after her death.

Friends and Family Mourn Abby Choi

Friends and family have described the influencer as kind and supportive. Abby Choi's family visited a mortuary to identify the model's body before mourning her death in Lung Mei Village. According to numerous reports, Chris Tam has promised to take care of her four children.

Bernard Cheng, one of Choi's friends, said the socialite had healthy relationships with her family members, including her in-laws. "I haven't imagined a person who's so good, so full of love, so innocent, a person who doesn't do anything bad will be killed like this," he said. "My heart is still heavy. I can't sleep well."
