How To Find A Dupe For Any Item You See On Pinterest

Who doesn’t love skimming Pinterest for new outfits or interior design inspiration? It’s easy to fall in love with just about every piece you find. You know what we don’t always love, though? The prices that come along with it.

Pinterest is full of amazing inspiration for everything from clothing to shoes to furniture to jewelry and more. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve found exactly what I was looking for, only to click on the link to the retailer’s website and see that the coffee table or the dress I want is hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. It’s frustrating and deflating, but not all is lost just because the item you want is out of your price range! This is where dupes can save the day.

So what is a “dupe” exactly? Dupe, short for duplicate, is simply a similar item at a lower price point. The item is often slightly different from the original and can be of lesser quality, but it really depends on what the new price point is and who the dupe’s retailer and/or manufacturer is.

For example, maybe you find a “dupe” for a Pottery Barn table that looks nice on the website, but when you receive it, it becomes clear that it was manufactured poorly. That wouldn’t be considered a very good dupe.

The sweet spot for dupes is when they’re still a decent quality product at a price point that’s more manageable but not dirt cheap because the old saying “you get what you pay for” is true. Just because you’re buying a less expensive item doesn’t mean you want to buy a piece of junk.

So, how can you find great dupes? It’s not always easy, and it does take some time to research, but there are some “hacks” you can employ to make the process simpler.

One strategy is to use the website dupe.com. There, you can paste the URL of the original item, and the site will search the world wide web for you to find a selection of dupes you can choose from. The only downside is that sometimes the items dupe.com finds are out of stock or sold out in your size, so it’s not quite as simple as it seems on the surface, but it’s still a helpful tool.

I put both dupe.com and my own investigative skills to the test to find some top-tier dupes from Pinterest, and here’s what I found!

Cozy Fairview Home Reading Chair

Original: Bed Bath and Beyond, $917

Dupe #1: Ashley Furniture Tie-Breaker Manual Swivel Glider Recliner, $650

Dupe #2: Bed Bath and Beyond Upholstered Swivel Barrel Armchair, $428

As a girl who loves to read, this cozy chair immediately caught my eye! However, I cannot in good conscience pay almost $1,000 for a chair. While these dupes aren’t 100% similar to the original, they both still look super cozy and the price points are much more in line with what I’d be willing to spend.

Anthropologie Fern Bookcase

Original: Anthropologie, $1,898

Dupe #1: Urban Outfitters Mason Storage Cabinet, $1,199

Dupe #2: Lexmod Tessa Tall Arched Storage Display Cabinet, $478

You know what would pair perfectly with your cozy new reading chair? A gorgeous new bookcase! Since it’s from Anthropologie, of course it’s nearly $2,000, but these dupes are both very solid and look so close to the original that the price points are almost hard to believe! You can’t go wrong with either. Giving myself an A+ on these dupe finds.

Anthropologie Tiered Cap-Sleeve Dress

Original: Anthropologie, $180

Dupe #1: Baltic Born Arla Smocked Maxi Dress, $73

Dupe #2: Petallush White Floral Short Sleeve Square Neck Smocked Midi Dress, $40

I love everything about Anthropologie except for their prices! I rarely buy anything full-price from their store and almost always wait for sales or stalk their clearance sections. This cap-sleeved dress is perfect for warmer weather and would be great to wear to an outdoor event or barbecue. The Baltic Born dupe is the perfect sweet spot of price point and quality. You’re paying half the price but still getting a quality dress!

Reformation Magnus Dress

Original: The Reformation, $298

Dupe #1: JJ’s House Ruffle Floral Print Asymmetrical Dress, $54

Dupe #2: Smaibulun Budding Beauty Split Floral Maxi Dress, $60

This is the kind of dress you know you could wear to a spring or summer wedding and get lots of compliments on. I honestly might like the first dupe even more than the original, which is how you know you’ve found a good one!

Anthropologie Bella Belle Catarina Platform Heels

Original: Anthropologie, $345

Dupe: Perphy Women's Floral Printed Open Toe Ankle Strap Chunky Heels Sandals, $66

Another Anthropologie find with a price tag that makes me want to either laugh or cry – I can’t tell. This dupe from Target isn’t perfect, but for less than $50, it’s still a great find that’s eye-catching and fun.

Hand-Painted Bumble Bee Tea Set

Original: Etsy, $214-$462

Dupe #1: KOHARA European Style Coffee Cup and Saucer Set, $70

Dupe #2: Certified International Bee Sweet 16Pc Dinnerware Set, $90

How cute is this tea set from Etsy? I didn’t know I wanted to throw a tea party, but after seeing it, that’s all I can think about. A tea party with your best gal pals honestly sounds like a great time. And with either of these dupes (or mixing and matching both of them), you could put together an adorable spread at an affordable price.

Anthropologie Demeter Dressing Mirror

Original: Anthropologie, $1,198

Dupe: Walmart Neutypechic Wooden Arch Mirror, $150

Freestanding floor-length mirrors just hit differently. There’s something about them that is so elegant and timeless, like you’re a fairytale character. That price from Anthropologie, while not surprising, is certainly less than dreamy. Luckily, Walmart is here to save the day with a similar dupe at a price that almost feels too good to be true.

Pottery Barn Toscana Extending Dining Table

Original: Pottery Barn, $2,000

Dupe: Walmart Homestyles Cambridge Off-White 7 Piece Dining Set, $1,536

Pottery Barn is another one of those brands where I always love the pieces, but they are consistently just out of my price point. Sure, I could spend $2,000 on a dining table, but is that really wise? The great thing about this dupe is that it is 25% less than the original and also comes with the entire set of chairs! We love a bonus dupe.

Net-A-Porter Agua Bendita Lima Flora Maxi Dress

Original: Net-A-Porter, $1,300

Dupe #1: Allison Embroidered Miley Halter Dress, $335

Dupe #2: Petal + Pup Botanique Midi Dress, $89

Not gonna lie, my jaw actually dropped a little bit when I saw the price point on this dress. It’s very high quality and locally made in Colombia, but still, that’s a lot to pay for a dress. Both of the dupes I found aren’t 100% replicas but are still very pretty in their own right and have the same vibe and feel as the original. Plus the prices are far less astronomical!

Hand-Painted Ceramic Swallow Dining Set

Original: Etsy, $345-$522

Dupe: Lenox Blue Bay Melamine 20 Piece Dinnerware Set, $200

This dining set is hand-painted which explains the high price point. You’re never going to find a picture perfect dupe for something that’s truly that unique and high quality, but this dinnerware set from Lenox comes pretty close! And since it’s from Lenox, you know you’re still getting a good quality product which is the most important thing to consider when you’re trying to find a good dupe.

Closing Thoughts

Once you get started, it’s actually kind of thrilling and addicting to stretch your research muscles and try to find solid dupes. It’s almost a better feeling than getting something on sale because you put the work in and feel like you outsmarted the retail system. With a little bit of work, you can find a good dupe for almost any high-priced product out there.
