So you’re in the market for a new job. Not just any job, though – you want to find your dream job. One where you feel competent, yet challenged, in an environment that’s welcoming and not toxic. It probably won’t be easy to find, but luckily you’re not alone in your search. ChatGPT is right there in the trenches with you.

Applying for jobs can be a very stressful time, especially if you’re in between jobs or if you were laid off. That’s why it’s important to utilize every resource at your disposal. ChatGPT is a great tool to use at times when you feel stuck, unmotivated, or simply have no idea what to say. Use it to upgrade your application game so you can land the perfect job faster and get back on your feet. Here are a few ways you can use ChatGPT to take your job search to the next level and land that dream position!

Give Your Resume a Makeover

Before you even begin applying for jobs, it’s important to make sure your resume is updated, visually appealing, and relevant to the jobs you’re applying to. You don’t necessarily need to change it for every single job application (although that can be useful sometimes), but it should at least be tailored to your particular industry and the jobs you’re applying to.

You can use ChatGPT to help you with all of this. Input your current resume and ask it to help you with formatting. ChatGPT can even rewrite sections of your resume for you to include specific keywords relevant to your industry. When you’re reading a job posting, take note of important keywords and phrases like “project management skills,” “experience with JIRA,” “familiarity with HubSpot,” etc.

Then, when you’re writing your resume, ask ChatGPT to include these same keywords so that when recruiters scan your resume for relevant experience, they’ll see you have exactly what they’re looking for and be more likely to move you into the “yes” pile.

Do Some Research

This step will vary in complexity depending on where you are in your career and job search. If you’re fresh out of college and not sure what industry you want to work in, then the job world is your oyster (sort of). Ask ChatGPT about different fields and positions, based on your interests and relevant experience. ChatGPT might come up with a few options you’ve never considered before or didn’t even know existed.

If you’re further along in your career and firmly entrenched within your particular industry, ChatGPT can still help you narrow down your search. Ask it for help finding companies that are good employers or who have open positions that align with your experience. Instead of surfing the internet for hours to gather information like this, just have ChatGPT gather relevant information for you so you can spend more time applying and less time doing extra work on the backend.

Upgrade Your Cover Letter

Is there anything worse than writing a cover letter? They are, in my professional opinion, the most annoying part of any job application process. They’re annoying to write, it’s difficult to make them sound interesting, and – let’s be real for a second – is anyone actually even reading these things? But alas, most companies still require them.

If you, like me, loathe writing cover letters, then ChatGPT is your new best friend! I would not advise having it write your entire cover letter from scratch because it will probably create something overly simplistic that’s far too generic for your chosen industry. Instead, write a brief outline of the points you want to hit or create a rough draft, and then ask ChatGPT to improve upon it. Continue the tailoring process by asking ChatGPT to change the tone (upbeat, yet professional), input keywords, and punch-up sentences until you have the perfect cover letter to help you land your dream job.

Help with Interview Prep

So you landed an interview! Congratulations! With so many applicants applying for every open position, job interviews can be very hard to come by these days and securing one is no easy feat. Before you start celebrating though, there’s still a lot more prep work you need to do because the interview is the most critical and important part of the job application process. Luckily, ChatGPT can help you out with prep.

In a job interview, you can rest assured that you’ll likely get common questions like “Tell us a bit about yourself” or “Why are you applying for this position?” Hopefully, you’ll be able to answer those without too much assistance. But a good interviewer will try to throw you a curve ball or two to see how you can handle going off-script. The best kinds of interviews are ones that don’t feel like an interview, they feel like a conversation.

Ask ChatGPT what some common interview questions are for your industry or company and how best to answer them. Make sure that you come into the interview with questions prepared too. At the end, when the interviewer asks if you have any questions, they’re not just being polite. They expect you to ask them some good questions, so go in knowing what you’re going to say! Ask ChatGPT what some good questions are to ask during a job interview.

Think questions along the lines of “Why is this position open?”, “Can you tell me a bit about the expectations for this role?”, or “What might a day in the life look like here?” Asking great questions at the end of an interview not only makes you more memorable, but it shows the interviewer that you’re a motivated and thoughtful applicant who would take this job seriously.

Perfect Your Follow-Up Game

So your interviews went well, and now you’re waiting to hear back about whether or not you got the job. This can be an extremely nerve-wracking time, but remember that the outcome is not completely out of your hands. This is your time to follow up and show that you really want the job.

Following up starts with thank you emails, and ChatGPT can help with that. Have it help you craft the perfect thank you email to send to the people who interviewed you. Everyone should receive a custom email where you thank them for taking the time to speak with you, reiterate something unique you spoke about during the interview, and remind them how excited you are about the opportunity. Have ChatGPT help you craft specifics, with the right tone and flourish that will make you even more memorable in the eyes of your interviewers.

If you’ve been waiting around for a while and still have not heard back from the recruiter, then you’re well within your rights to send a follow-up email asking about the status of your application. Use ChatGPT to help you craft a polite email to the recruiter expressing how you’re still excited about the position, you understand that they’re busy, and you’re just checking in to see when you can expect an update. Make sure your tone is polite and respectful while still expressing that you’re motivated.

Closing Thoughts

During the job application process, it can be difficult to strike the perfect balance between professional and casual. You want to prove you’re serious and know your stuff, but that you’re also fun to work with and have a good sense of humor. The goal is to be memorable – but in a good way. Using ChatGPT can help you perfect that balance so that you’re more appealing to potential employers and more likely to land your dream job! All while having to do less heavy lifting, which is a win-win.
