Is anyone else sick and tired of remakes?

Single White Female is the 1992 psychological thriller that made roommates seem like a gamble not worth taking. Given its title, the reported casting of Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell has left some people baffled.

The movie follows a woman whose seemingly innocent roommate gradually morphs into an obsessive, violent doppelgänger. So, naturally, the internet couldn’t help but ask, what’s the plan here? Are they going to change the title? @mick3hpoo on X wrote, “But they’re not white.”

Will it be updated to something more fitting? Beyond the racial mismatch, some fans are questioning whether the eerie twin-like resemblance between Ortega and Russell works in favor of or against the remake. Part of what made the original so unsettling was the slow transformation of the antagonist into a near clone of her victim, starting as an unassuming roommate before adopting the same haircut, clothes, and mannerisms.

Others are exhausted because of the remake aspect. @Honnydipp on X tweeted, “Typical Hollywood. Too lazy to develop an original thought for a movie.”

We already got a modern version of this story with The Roommate (2011), starring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly.

No one is questioning Ortega or Russell’s abilities. Both actresses have delivered amazing performances (Wednesday, Scream, Bones and All). They can handle dark, psychological material. If you have two of the most exciting young actors in Hollywood, why not give them something new?

This announcement has already sparked more debate than excitement. That’s never a great sign for a movie. If Sony and 3000 Pictures want this to work, they might want to start by explaining the title choice. Otherwise, this just might be another forgettable addition to Hollywood’s growing pile of unnecessary remakes.
