Jennifer Lopez Was Pressured To Get Botox At 23 Years Old But Refused: "My Face Would Be A Totally Different Face Today"
In a world where celebrities get work done on their face starting as young as 18 years old, Jennifer Lopez has some different advice to women, and it involves using sunscreen every day.
Jennifer Lopez, a versatile entertainer renowned for her singing, acting, and dancing skills, has captured hearts globally with her enduring talent and timeless beauty. However, maintaining her radiant appearance hasn't always been as straightforward as it might seem on the red carpet. A few years ago, she shared an experience where she felt pressured to get Botox done at a young age. Many people have speculated what Lopez has done over the years to keep herself looking so youthful and fresh, but at least we know now what she hasn't done.

In a candid interview for Elle in 2020, Lopez discussed a pivotal moment in her skincare regimen. At just 23, she faced a decision that many in the spotlight grapple with: to use Botox or not. Lopez shared that while she was with her then-boyfriend, they both visited different dermatologists. Her dermatologist recommended a simple routine: a quality cleanser and sunscreen. He emphasized the importance of the latter, advising her that maintaining healthy skin from a young age would yield benefits in the future.
However, upon visiting her boyfriend's dermatologist, the doctor pointed out a minor line on her face, suggesting she start using Botox. Since she was only in her early twenties and had never used Botox before, Lopez declined. She humorously wondered aloud about how different her face might appear today if she had begun Botox treatments back then. Her boyfriend at the time even supported the idea, but Lopez was clear about not wanting to proceed.
"I was like, no, thank you," Lopez recalled. "And I just wonder what would’ve happened to me if I would’ve started Botox at 23, what I would look like right now. My face would be a totally different face today."
“One of the big things I would encourage everybody to do from the time they’re 15 years old, even younger, is wear sunscreen every day," she continued. "That’s a big skincare secret that people kind of do but don’t do. They use moisturizers, but they don’t put on sunscreen every day. That is something I have done from the time I was 22 years old.”
Lopez also encouraged women to stop making comments like, "You look great for 50." Women want to look great no matter their age. "We don’t want people going, you look great for 60, 50, 40, 35. You want people to just go, wow, you look amazing," she said.
Lopez is passionate about the protective qualities of sunscreen, emphasizing its role in maintaining youthful skin. She believes in its daily use, not just as a preventive measure against the sun's harmful rays, but also as a regular moisturizer. To this end, her product line, JLo Beauty, includes a sunscreen designed to be worn every day. This, she contends, is more vital to skin health than any other product.
Beyond just skincare products, Lopez credits her youthful glow to daily affirmations and maintaining a positive mindset. She's a firm believer that external beauty mirrors internal well-being. In essence, Lopez’s approach to beauty is holistic, emphasizing the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit.
Over the past several years, Botox, technically known as Botulinum toxin injections, has seen a significant surge in popularity among American women. Botox, which is primarily used for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles, has become synonymous with the quest for youthful looks in contemporary culture. Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has consistently shown a rise in the number of Botox treatments administered in the USA. For instance, in the early 2000s, there were a mere few hundred thousand procedures recorded annually. However, by the end of the 2010s, this number had skyrocketed to over 7 million annually, indicating a massive growth rate. As the procedure has become more mainstream, accessibility and affordability have improved, making it an attainable luxury for many.
While many other celebrities certainly get Botox done, as well as a myriad of other procedures and even surgeries, it's refreshing to hear someone at Lopez's level discourage women from getting work done at a young age. Lopez doesn't assert that she doesn't get anything done now, but she does imply that if you get Botox and other things done in your 20s (or perhaps even in your 30s), you will probably change the way your face naturally ages and develops over the years. Never say never when it comes to cosmetic procedures, but it's probably best to say no while you're still young.
