In a not-so-surprising development, President Joe Biden, 81, announced on social media that he will not accept his nomination, instead choosing to dedicate his remaining term to his presidential duties. Biden is now endorsing his VP Kamala Harris for her to be the Democratic nominee in this upcoming 2024 election.

"My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term," he shared on X/Twitter on July 21, 2024. "My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this."

In an official document, Biden thanked the American people, adding that he would speak "to the Nation later this week in more detail" about his decision to drop out.

While Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris (arguably a frontrunner), other Democrats might still challenge her for the nomination. Harris's approval ratings are not much better than Biden's. The final decision will be made at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month, where over 4,000 delegates will vote to choose the new nominee.

However, this decision will be made just three months before the election. Will the Democratic Party rally enough support to secure a victory this year?

The Democratic convention is set to take place on Aug. 19–22 in Chicago.
