In a plea that has spread across social media, the owner of Buddies Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, shared her sadness over a significant rent increase threatening the future of her beloved café. The video, posted on TikTok, quickly went viral.

In the video, the owner, a woman named Rachel, tearfully explains that the sudden rent hike has made it financially unfeasible to keep the doors of Buddies Coffee open.

Her caption read: "Happy start to women’s history months I guess ! Hearing this news today just now completely broke me. As a self funded small like true mom and pop business this news is scary - I’ve never tried to nor want to “compete” with anyone. If you know me you know I truly don’t see anyone as a competitor- however, knowing someone -whoever they are is planning on opening literally next door not down the block across the street around the corner. I cannot deny it will crush me. I’m hopeful we will make the most out of these next 6-7 months in this space and I just know God was holding my hand when I decided to sign a lease in the city (with hopes and dreams of having two shops) I will continue to remain delusional always I will always work hard show up for myself and show up for others..."

The outpouring of support was immediate, and among those moved by her story was musician Joe Jonas, who took to social media to share the call for support.

Joe Jonas, known for his work with the Jonas Brothers and his solo projects, has been working on various creative projects. In July 2024, he announced his second solo album, "Music for People Who Believe in Love," with singles like "Work It Out" and "What This Could Be."

Beyond music, Jonas has collaborated with fashion brands and participated in environmental initiatives. He finalized his divorce from actress Sophie Turner in September 2024, with whom he shares two daughters, Willa and Delphine.

Jonas encouraged his followers to visit Buddies Coffee and talked about the importance of supporting small businesses facing challenging times. His endorsement brought national attention to the café's plight, leading to a surge in customers and donations.

Local residents have organized fundraisers and community events to help cover the increased rent costs. A GoFundMe campaign has been established, with donations pouring in from supporters near and far. Rachel has since responded to the support with more TikToks and a heartfelt thank you.

She wrote: "I don’t want to leave anyone hanging :) I see the support I feel the support and I’m so happy there’s so many new eyes on BUDDIES COFFEE. Thank you for community thank you for it all."

This situation also highlights a big issue affecting small businesses in urban areas: the challenge of rising rents and taxes. The combined efforts of local customers and high-profile figures like Joe Jonas are a example of what can happen when people come together for a good cause.
