The mini dress is a classic wardrobe staple for most women. But have you ever wished there was a dress length in between the mini and midi dress?

Most brands offer just three categories: mini, midi, and maxi dresses. If you’re on the taller side and often can’t wear a mini dress due to it being, well, mini, then you probably gravitate toward the midi-length dress for that added coverage. However, if all you have are midi dresses hanging in your closet, you might feel bored with the lack of variety. Or midi dresses might hit you at that weird mid-calf spot. While we wish that brands would get the message that their styles aren’t working for their tallest customers, we’re convinced that there are ways to participate in these cute looks while being happy with the length of our dresses.

This summer, we’re loving blue, white, florals, and embroidery for our dresses. But if you can’t find these fun styles in the right length, we can help. Let’s look into some creative solutions and tips if you wish there were more options for you!

Shopping Tips

Because most mini dresses will appear super short on your body, it’s best to buy ones that aren’t overly tight. A mini dress with a cinched waist or tiers will break up the overall shape, making the dress appear shaped for your body. However, a flowy dress is another great option to add a little extra length to a shorter silhouette. Shorter sundresses are a classy option that you can still wear, as long as you buy the style for your height.

The midi length dress is appealing because it offers the coverage you want, but it can often feel too formal for everyday wear (especially when most midi length dresses are marketed as wedding guest dresses). If you’re struggling to find casual midi dresses, look for a lightweight material like cotton or linen to dress down the longer silhouette. Also, a leg slit is a great way to bridge the gap between the mini and midi for casual wear.

Abercrombie is a great place to start when looking for appropriate dress lengths. Just like their denim line, Abercrombie offers Tall, Regular, and Petite sizing in their dresses, which allows you to find the right fit for your body. Personally, I’m on the shorter side (5’2”), but I have long legs, so I buy my mini dresses in the Tall sizing and my midi/maxi dresses in the petite sizing, which gives me the perfect dress length every time!

Or, if you love the dresses you’re finding at other stores and boutiques but don’t love the length, you can pay to get your dresses altered for a perfect fit and length. Alterations can get a little pricey, but if you have the extra resources, this is a great way to invest in timeless, classic pieces you love!

Here are 20 dresses we love that provide a little extra length for that perfect mini-midi dress fit!
