In 2023, comedian Kathy Griffin revealed she was diagnosed with an "extreme case" of complex PTSD. Griffin has been known to struggle with drug addiction and has attempted suicide in the past. While she's mostly famous for her comedy specials, she's often remembered for the disturbing image of her holding a decapitated head of Donald Trump.
Now we know why Griffin has had such a troublesome career. In a recent appearance on the The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast, the TV personality opened up about her traumatic home life and her pedophile brother, Ken Griffin.
"Yeah, I had a brother that was a pedophile, but it was just a very heavy thing. It was very divisive in my family, obviously. I have a tremendous amount of empathy for my mom and dad because I know that my dad did not molest my brother. He was molested by a coach and a priest. I have the most empathy for his victims, though. So I had no relationship with him once I found that out."
When host Michael Bosstick asked Griffin how she found out, she said, "His wife told me."
"And not everyone in the family believed her," the Suddenly Susan star said. "He was also physically abusive to her. Also, just to be told, as a 10-year-old, 'Oh, by the way, your brother molests children, and he beats me.' And then he did beat that woman up right in front of me and my sister and brother. And it was such a violent act, and it was so intense."
Ken died from an overdose. "And that was the first time my parents had to deal with that part of his personality. He went to prison, and then he died. He overdosed on crack. So he was homeless, and sometimes I would see him if I was going to an audition. I would keep driving. I don't support pedophiles," Griffin said.
This is not the first time Griffin has spoken out about her brother. In 2023, the comedian opened up about Ken following Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher's support for Danny Masterson, who was sentenced on September 7, 2023, to 30 years to life in prison for raping two women. The Straight to Hell star said, “I wrote about it in my first book, and it was a horrible, horrible thing, and I tried to get him caught. Now, this was my brother, so I don’t want to hear about Ashton and Mila and Giovanni Ribisi and people that feel that they had to stick up for Danny Masterson because he was their ‘bro,’ he was their ‘buddy’ – this was my own brother."
Most times, people in Hollywood stay silent when it comes to the abuse that occurs behind the scenes. Even though they were related, Griffin still tried to turn in her own brother – and was shunned by her family for doing so. "Blood was not thicker than water in my case," she recalled, "and if you know that somebody is committing SA [sexual assault], you should do something if you can.“
