Gwen Stefani is not allowed to think for herself.

Gwen Stefani is under fire for following conservative commentator Candace Owens and a Catholic account. Oh, and for – brace yourself – sharing a video of The Chosen actor Jonathan Roumie talking about faith. The scandal.

This has sparked a dramatic round of playlist purges and “I can’t look at her the same” X posts from the very tolerant and inclusive crowd. One user on X shared, “WE ARE REMOVING HOLLABACK GIRL FROM THE PLAYLIST,” while another whined, “This is such a letdown…I can’t look at her the same.” Someone else chimed in, “Knew she was a right-wing grifter when she started promoting a Bible app.”

But hold on. Since when has Gwen not been Catholic?

She’s Been Catholic Forever, People

Let’s do a quick history check: Gwen Stefani was raised Catholic. She’s always talked about her faith. And she literally married a cowboy. Did people think Blake Shelton was leading her through feminist book clubs?

She’s even spoken about how her faith shaped her, saying, “I grew up, like, a Catholic good girl. Total Brady Bunch family.” She’s never been shy about this, so the outrage over her engaging with Catholic content feels less like a revelation and more like selective amnesia.

This new outrage cycle started when Stefani commented on a video of Roumie discussing Christianity with Tucker Carlson. She wrote, “Wow Jonathan Roumie, you are a powerful inspirational human, what an enlightening intelligent beautiful interview thank you for being you… gx.” In 2025, that’s a crime.

Stefani wasn’t pushing politics on anyone, she didn’t condemn LGBTQ members or any marginalized groups, she just expressed her beliefs. And that’s fine. The way some fans react, you’d think she was launching a Senate campaign.

Back in December, Stefani caught heat for partnering with the Hallow app, a Catholic prayer app, or an Advent prayer challenge. She got backlash for that, too.

Stefani has always been upfront about her personal values, even when they didn’t align with the “edgy” rock-star expectations of the No Doubt era. I would say her not mingling with the Hollywood crowd is edgier these days. “You’ve got to be a feminist and you’ve got to hate guys. And you’ve got to cuss and be tough,” she once said, describing the pressure she felt. “And I was never like that.” This is who she is. It’s who she’s always been.

There's just as much more support for all the “I’m done with Gwen” tweets. One fan wrote, “Gwen, thank you for posting this and allowing the world to see how unhinged people have gotten over politics.” Another pointed out the obvious: “He’s a Catholic and Gwen is a Catholic and it’s the beginning of Lent. Why can’t everyone just be themselves without all the presumption and judgment??”
