Melissa Viviane Jefferson, popularly known as Lizzo, debuted in the music scene with her 2013 album Lizzobangers, and rose to prominence with her third studio album Cuz I Love You in 2019, which earned her mainstream success. She's known for being a body positive advocate and political activist. Her hit singles like "Truth Hurts" and "Good as Hell" topped the Billboard charts and became anthems of supposed self-love and female empowerment. Her accomplishments include three Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2020. Time magazine named her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2020. With millions of followers on social media, she has become one of the most popular musicians and influencers in the world. She recently received heavy backlash for an Instagram live she did detailing her experience at a recent Beyoncé concert.

Lizzo Bashed for Shading Taylor Swift and Comparing Her to Beyoncé

Lizzo recently went live on Instagram and told everyone about going to Beyoncé's concert in Warsaw on June 27. She also talked about how her album Renaissance had a huge impact on her, making her also consider the impact she has on others. "I'm that girl, it was just cozy, it was comfortable in my skin, don't f*ck with my sis, you won't break my soul, nobody can judge me but me, I was born free," Lizzo said.

She also praised Beyoncé's live performance and said she's one of the best out there. During the live, there were presumably some people in the live comment section who brought up Taylor Swift as one of the best performers of this generation. Lizzo seemingly responds to this and says nobody can ever compare to Beyoncé.

"When I talk about Beyonce's show, don't bring nobody up, ain't nobody comparing right now, and that's not even on some disrespectful sh*t, that's on some real sh*t," she said emphatically. "Let's keep it a buck, let's be real. Keep it cute. Keep it cute, or keep it mute. That's where I'm at. The show was amazing."

Lizzo never mentioned Swift by name, but many Swifties are taking this as an insult. "Is Lizzo shading Taylor Swift?" TikTokers began asking.

Fans flooded in to support Swift on a TikTok that shared a clip of Lizzo's live, saying there was no reason for Lizzo to shade her or even attempt to compare the two. "Beyoncé and Taylor's shows are both phenomenal. They are some of the best performers of our time. Comparing them is so icky," one person commented.

"Okay love Lizzo but she didn't even go to the eras tour yet if she ever will," another person wrote.

"Ya except Taylor's is more attended, makes more money, and is overall better. She's the top performer of our generation," another person wrote.

However, others had trouble believing that Lizzo was even talking about Swift at all. "This is such a reach y'all," one person commented.

"I didn't find this offensive towards Taylor," another person said.

"It's just an opinion lmao I don't think it's shade," someone wrote.

Someone shared this clip of Lizzo and criticized her for pitting successful women against each other. "Just say that you ENJOYED BEYS CONCERT," the person wrote. Lizzo quote tweeted the sentiment and said, "I'll say what I wanna say lil b*tch." Her account is set to private, but a follower took a screenshot and posted it to their page.

"Wasn't Lizzo supposed to be all about feminism and love-spreading? like is she suddenly a toxic twitter stan?" @yoeltwt tweeted.

The comment section was full of disagreement, with some Swifties saying that Lizzo was being disrespectful and others saying that she didn't do anything of the sort. Both Beyoncé and Swift have generated an extremely high level of revenue from live performances in their career. It's estimated that Swift's Eras tour could net her between $500 million to $1.5 billion. Reportedly, Beyoncé has grossed $767.3 million and sold 8.9 million tickets from all of her concerts in total around the world, including shows with Jay-Z. While ticket sales don't necessarily prove which performer is better, some fans are using the numbers to compare the two. Regardless of whether Lizzo meant to shade Swift, she hasn't said anything about it on her social media to clarify what she said, leaving some fans disappointed by her silence.
