Lizzo Ditches Veganism For A High-Protein Diet Of Meat And Veggies
Lizzo has quit veganism, shed some pounds, and is more active than ever – and I’m here for her glow-up!

The Lizzo rebrand has been inspiring and refreshing to witness.
After years of promoting the body positivity movement and flaunting her large figure, the singer is stepping into a new and healthy era. In a recent Instagram video, the “About Damn Time” singer opened up about her decision to quit her vegan diet, explaining how reintroducing animal protein has helped her feel more energized and mentally clearer.
"When I got to Japan, I was amazed at how clean and delicious their food was," she shared. "After tests and research, I found that animal proteins helped me lose weight and improved my mental fog."
No surprise here! A 2019 study found that vegans are twice as likely to develop anemia compared to meat-eaters, mainly due to low iron and vitamin B12 intake. Another study with 48,000 participants found that vegans were more likely to suffer from a stroke compared to their meat-eating counterparts due to low iron and vitamin B12 intake.
While the results of eating a balanced meal full of meat speak for themselves, Lizzo, who became a vegan in 2020, still thinks that a plant-based diet is the healthiest option. “I do believe that the vegan diet is still the healthiest diet to have, and I aspire to one day be a raw alkaline vegan,” she explained. “Until then, this is the diet that's helped me reach my goals and helped me feel good in my body. It can be scary talking about things like this because veganism is such a sensitive subject.”
Lizzo has stayed busy posting gym selfies on the ‘Gram and showing off her weight-loss transformation. This year, she wrote on social media, “A year ago today I was so broken and dark that I couldn't have imagined feeling the way I do now.” In a New York Times interview, she emphasized the importance of self-love in her routine, noting, “I’m taking the time every day to put some love into my body. There is never a day when I regret taking a walk or doing some Pilates.”
The public turned on Lizzo on August 2023 after her former backup dancers accused her of sexual assault and mistreatment. It seemed like the intense scrutiny and South Park's obesity-themed special forced Lizzo to confront her unhealthy habits head-on.
It seems things are finally looking up for the singer. Now, with her newfound focus on health and wellness instead of promoting obesity and mindless consumption, Lizzo's journey seems to signal the beginning of the end for the fat positivity movement. While she's still teaching women to love themselves, her message, whether intentional or not, includes a commitment to physical health.
In recent years, several high-profile celebrities have ditched their vegan diets. Samuel L. Jackson abandoned his veganism after struggling to maintain his weight for film roles, while Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard both returned to consuming animal products for health reasons during Bell's pregnancy. Miley Cyrus also cited feeling “running on empty” during performances as a reason for her shift back to a more inclusive diet, including fish. Are we witnessing the downfall of veganism?
