"Worst Movie Of All Time": Spider-Man Spinoff "Madame Web" Gets 3.6 Rating On IMDB, 17% On Rotten Tomatoes
Madame Web is apparently "worse than Morbius," according to viewers, debuting with a rating of 3.6 out of 10 on IMDB and 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Madame Web is so bad that some people have even claimed it's worse than Morbius.
The film, which stars Dakota Johnson as Madame Web and Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, is about a spider-woman who has the power to see the future. She attempts to save three teens from getting murdered by a man named Ezekial O'Connor (Tahar Rahim).
First things first: Madame Web is not a Marvel film and has no relation to the Spider-Man we know and love. However, protagonist Cassie Webb's best friend is Ben Parker – yes, Peter Parker's uncle. And while the Madame Web character first appeared in Marvel Comics, specifically in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, the film is a Sony production.
The movie was released on Valentine's Day, but it's getting zero love from the public. At the time of writing, the movie has a rating of 3.6/10 on IMDB and 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Barry Hertz, Film Editor & Chief Film Writer for The Globe and Mail, gave the movie a 0 on Metacritic. "A genuine Chernobyl-level disaster that seems to get exponentially more radioactive as it goes along, this detour to one of the dustier corners of Marvel’s content farm is a dead-end from start to finish," he said.
Megan Cruz, a television and film commentator on TikTok, says that Madame Web "very well might be the worst movie ever made."
"I honestly couldn't even try to guess what the studio executives who cobbled this movie together were even going for," she adds. "Like, what was the goal here? Not only is there almost no action in this movie, there's also no actual superheroes in this movie. The script is literally laughably bad. There are multiple times in the movie where I could not stop myself from laughing at something that was just so absurd for a character to say out loud."
And before you say that this movie was feminist garbage, it apparently didn't have a feminist slant at all, aside from the fact that the cast is full of talented women who deserve greater roles. Cruz argues that the movie sucks because "it's offensive to the very idea of artistic expression" and that the women in the movie are all "simpering idiot stereotypes." The blame here should be placed on Sony and the writers for another failed motion picture.
Someone on IMDB gave the movie one star, stating that it was "a gigantic mess" and that the uses of product placements were "annoying." Others who also gave it a poor rating are begging Sony to stop.
The host of Straw Hat Goofy Movie Podcast on TikTok was invited to the premiere of Madame Web and revealed that it was "one of the worst superhero movies that I've seen in a long time." Hilariously, someone in the comment section asks if it's worse than Morbius, to which the host responds: "I think so."
"I still walked out of it going, 'What did I just watch?' A lot of the dialogue is so questionable," he explains. "It feels like you're playing a video game, and they're teaching you how to play the video game. Cause characters just say what's on their mind, and it just comes out feeling awkward."
Sony isn't the only one struggling with superhero movies. Disney's Marvel Studios and Warner Brothers' DC Studios have also been creating flops. Disney's The Marvels actually became the lowest-earning MCU movie, and Bob Iger mentioned "reduced output" for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thank goodness. Everyone is experiencing superhero (and remake) fatigue from movies that are built on cash grabs rather than creativity, and it really shows.
