In discussing McConaughey’s memoir Greenlights, and how people tend to forget famous people have a past and a history before fame, Brand commented, “I have sensed what I might describe as condemnation and criticism of ordinary working people. A kind of offhandedness, like, ‘Oh, they’re dumb, they’re voting for Brexit, they’re voting for Trump.’ I don’t like it, and I don’t like to hear it.”

When asked how he feels about that kind of “judgment” and the lack of shared values between the Left and the Right, McConaughey discussed how he’s striving to discover the science behind the values of a politically centrist society and commented how meeting in the middle is “more of a dare right now than it’s ever been.”

“I almost feel like it’s a move to say, ‘Let’s get aggressively centric. I dare you',” he said.

He further commented, “There are a lot [of people] on that illiberal Left that absolutely condescend, patronize, and are arrogant towards the other 50 percent.”

Meeting in the middle is “more of a dare right now than it’s ever been.”

He gave an example from recent history to illustrate his point. “I’m sure you saw it in our industry when Trump was voted in four years ago, they were in denial that it was real. Some of them were in absolute denial,”  McConaughey said.

“And even now we’re going to see if we can stabilize, coming out of, it looks like Biden’s our guy. Now you’ve got the right that’s in denial, cause their side has fake news. And I understand, they’ve been fed fake news. No one knows what the hell to believe, right? So they’re putting down their last bastion of defense,” McConaughey said.

McConaughey continued to criticize the Left’s political strategy of name-calling and coloring their opponents as corrupt, explaining how it loses them half their audience. He blamed this method of operating for why conservatives look at Hollywood and cultural elites with disdain.

He said, “The left is going to have to understand the science of the values and the meet you in the middle.”
