Matty Healy Is Engaged, And Swifties Are Freaking Out

Let's rewind: Taylor Swift and The 1975's Matty Healy dated last year.

In May 2023, Swift and Healy became the center of dating rumors after Healy was spotted at Swift's Nashville shows. They were also caught hanging out and holding hands in New York City. Their relationship was short-lived, and the two broke up in June shortly after Healy faced backlash for his controversial comments regarding Ice Spice.

Then, Travis Kelce came into the picture, and it felt like everyone forgot about Healy and Swift dating. Except for the Swifties, of course, who are now disappointed in Healy's recent engagement with his model girlfriend, Gabbriette Bechtel. Here's what they have to say.

Matty Healy Is Being Insensitive to Taylor Swift

A year is too soon for some Swifties, apparently. One superfan took to Reddit to write out their disappointment in Healy proposing after she had just released The Tortured Poets Department. "I just don't understand why he would propose so soon after an album like TTPD drops," wrote @Curios_A_Crane on Reddit. "They've [Bechtel and Healy] been dating for 10 months. She's 26. She's not going anywhere. He couldn't wait 6 months or another year?"

The fan continued, "Why would he be so insensitive to Taylor? It just feels like he really wants to hurt her. Like he doesn't care about her feelings at all. Were the swifties right about him this whole time? Did they stop her from getting too far deep into a relationship with someone who actually doesn't care about her? Because this behavior says I don't care about you at all."

A woman named Kelly Keegs on X/Twitter insists that this timing is intentional. "Engagement aside if anyone thinks the timing of this isn’t intentional you don’t know a bitter toxic man (I do actually think they are a good couple and I hope he is normal to her otherwise)," she wrote.

Someone responded by saying, "Not everyone’s lives revolve around Taylor Swift," to which Healy's mom, Denise Welch, responded with three laughing emojis.

Obviously, the Swifties immediately attacked her. "Thank you for proving everything is about Taylor. Now go get your son and future DIL some rehab before something tragic happens instead of the constant jabs at Taylor because she called your son out," wrote @WeLoveTheSaints. Other fans told Welch to stay out of Swift's business, which is hilarious because they can't seem to leave Healy or Bechtel alone.

Swift has made so much money this past year thanks to her new album and The Eras Tour. Plus, she's a 34-year-old woman in a happy relationship with a successful football player. I think she'll be fine.

In the meantime, Healy's mom has confirmed the engagement news. "I've obviously known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged, but then they went over to see their friends, Charli and George, in New York, and I woke up this morning to the fact that they put it on Instagram!" Welch said.

Bechtel, who's known for her grunge, dark aesthetic, received a black diamond ring from Healy. "Black diamond, he had it made for her," Welch added. "I couldn't be more thrilled. She's from Los Angeles. She's absolutely gorgeous."
