In a recent study investigating the connection between physical attributes and political perceptions, researchers found that physically strong, muscular men are seen as more conservative by people, suggesting our society subconsciously associates physical strength with specific ideologies.

U.S. participants from four unique samples examined how people perceive the political beliefs of men who vary in physical strength and musculature. The results of the study were clear: Strong men were consistently seen as more conservative by others, and this perception continued regardless of whether the conservatism was related to social issues (like moral values and family) or fiscal matters (policies regarding taxation and the economy). It also didn't matter if these muscular men seemed financially well off; wealth cues had little to no effect on these perceptions.

Strong men were consistently seen as more conservative by others.

The authors wrote, "Participants further viewed strong targets as endorsing more conservative stances than weak men."

Additionally, the study found that people believed that strong men place a high value on personal liberty. Not surprising, since research in the past showed that self-control was tied to higher levels of physical fitness, leading to the idea that fit men may be more autonomous, and, therefore, may possibly place higher values on "freedom." Are these perceived notions based on stereotypes, or do they go deeper than that? It seems these assumptions could be from a sixth sense, an inner knowing that health, beauty, and truth are synonymous.

Research has shown us for years that conservatives are more attractive than liberals. This latest study on men's physique and conservativism reflects previous results. Science connects values like beauty, truth, and goodness once again.
