The real luxury these days is owning your own land and animals.
Millie Bobby Brown could be at the club dancing to Charli XCX’s "365" or sipping champagne at a high-rise in L.A., but instead, she’s opted for the humble farm life. The 20-year-old actress, known best for her role as Eleven on Stranger Things, has chosen a messy but rewarding path.
Not About the “Trad” Aesthetic
When Brown and her husband, Jake Bongiovi (yes, the son of Jon Bon Jovi), moved to a sprawling farm in Georgia, the internet had opinions. Thanks to X’s toxicity and endless obsession with everything tradwives, people were wondering if she was simply focusing on aesthetics. Brown shut that down real quick.
“I’m not doing it for the aesthetic. I’m doing it because I love it. There are maybe some trad wives out there doing it because it seems wholesome, but it is not,” she told Vanity Fair. “If you’re not picking up horse sh*t or washing a cow with your bare hands, then that life is not made for you at all.” So rethink your Pinterest board filled with women in clean, polished milkmaid dresses sitting on the grass having a picnic or influencers baking sourdough for Instagram – living on a farm takes a lot of work.
For someone who grew up in the spotlight, Brown is surprisingly at ease in her domestic routine. Her farm is home to goats, sheep, cows, donkeys, and her therapy dog, Winnie. “You think animals are peaceful. You think the South is peaceful. You think this place is peaceful. But there’s so much chaos. My animals are loud, and it’s messy, and my dogs are crazy,” she admitted. “And there is, you know, laughter and a lot of passion and excitement, and it is a very vibrant place. There is so much chaos, and that is where I thrive.”
Brown is serious about her animals and has been taking animal-focused courses at Purdue University. She has big plans to apply her knowledge in a hands-on externship. “I’m able to treat wounds, take their pulse, moderate blood pressure, things like that. I do all their medical records myself,” she said. She’s also involved in animal rescue through her foundation, Joey’s Friends, where she helps save dogs from kill shelters and find them forever homes.
“Adoption campaigns are wonderful temporarily, but you really have to get in there and do the work to make a difference,” she said.
Ignoring the Hate
Bongiovi and Brown’s relationship has been under scrutiny since they got engaged in 2023. They married in May 2024, and despite the internet’s skepticism about young love, they seem rock solid. “Since the beginning of our relationship, we were pretty united. … We talked about our political views, what kind of family we want to build, the kind of home we want to live in, the kind of relationship we’re looking for, the kind of careers we want,” she shared. “It’s such an important decision, and we wanted to make sure we were making the right one. I knew I was. It always felt right with him.”
