I’ve always been passionate about health and wellness, and I want to share with you a few herbs that help during the cold and flu season. These herbs also help with stress and anxiety naturally. Nature has a way of giving us everything thing we need. It’s amazing!  I guess you can call me a modern hippie.

Astragalus

The Astragalus plant has been known to fight many illnesses and diseases for centuries.  It’s derived from the root of a plant in the pea family. Astragalus is a powerful adaptogen. An adaptogen herb helps balance your bodily functions. For example, if your estrogen levels are too high, it will bring estrogen levels down to create balance in your body and calm your hormones. I love adaptogen herbs because they go with the flow of your body and accommodate for what your body needs. Astragalus helps you adapt to stressful situations as it builds and strengthens your immune system. This herb is also excellent for reducing inflammation in the body. An easy way to get this herb in your health regimen is to add it to your coffee or matcha in the morning.

Oregano Oil

I love this one! Oregano oil is a natural antibiotic. OMG trust me, this helped me with a major toothache once, and now I swear by it!  It’s very powerful, and the flavor can be intense at first, but it’s a great antibacterial. Oregano oil also has antiviral and antifungal properties, which is amazing. It also helps with respiratory function by removing mucus and phlegm from the lungs. It usually comes in a tincture form, and I recommend putting a few drops into orange juice. I put it into juice because oregano can be pretty powerful alone, so the OJ sweetens it up. Plus, you’re getting your vitamin C intake at the same time. A win-win!

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a very popular herb in Ayurveda practice (Indian natural medicine). It’s also known as Indian Ginseng. It’s classified as an adaptogen herb just like Astragalus.  Ashwagandha helps to alleviate depression. This herb has also been known to ease stress and relieve anxiety from the body, mentally and physically. It also contains antibacterial properties. Indian Ginseng builds immune function by increasing your red and white blood cell count, in turn creating a better sense of well-being in your body.  This herb usually comes in powdered form, so I add it to my smoothies — a great way to reap the benefits of this natural medicine.

Elderberry

The usage of elderberry has been traced back to ancient Egyptian times. It is known as one of the top antiviral plants on the planet. The ancient Greek Hippocrates, “The Father of Medicine,” called this herb “the medicine chest” for all of its healing abilities.  Back in 1995, the government actually employed the use of elderberry during Panama’s Flu Pandemic. Elderberry, also known as Sambucus, is part of the blackberry family. Elderberry aids in cold and flu relief. It has powerful immune-boosting properties. It’s also great for sinus and respiratory function as well.  You can even take elderberry for allergies because it’s known to calm inflammation due to allergies. Elderberry usually comes in syrup form, so putting it in your tea would be excellent.

Manuka Honey

Last, but surely not least, Manuka Honey. This honey is considered the most powerful of all kinds of honey on the market. It contains active enzymes and is a powerful immune booster. It contains antiviral and antibacterial properties. Taking manuka honey orally can also help with respiratory issues like coughing. Studies have found that Manuka honey is effective in inhibiting flu viruses, including H1N1 and Swine flu. Add some to your tea and take in the benefits of this extremely powerful honey.
