O.J. Simpson Dead At 76, Prompts "Goodbye Twitter World" To Trend On X—Here's Why
O.J. Simpson has died from cancer, but not everyone is mourning his death.
Former football star O.J. Simpson, 76, has passed away after battling cancer.
The family of Simpson was the first to announce the news on X (formerly Twitter).
"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer," their statement said. "He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."
For the most part, Simpson's death has not been met with grace due to his history as a murder suspect. The former athlete's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman were found dead in front of her LA residence on June 12, 1994. Simpson was charged with her murder but was later found not guilty – even though a bloodstained knife was found in Simpson's home.
One user reposted an old video of Simpson pretending to stab a reporter after he told her she had a "surprise" for her.
Someone else added an 11-minute-long video of comedian Norm Macdonald slamming Simpson.
Since the announcement of Simpson's death, many have tweeted "Goodbye, Twitter world" on the platform, causing the greeting to trend.
Simpson often greeted the audience on the platform with "Hey, Twitter world" in his videos.
Simpson was acquitted of two counts of murder during a high-profile trial dubbed the "Trial of the Century" in 1995. He later served nine years in prison for playing a role in a botched armed robbery and kidnapping in 2008.
While Simpson maintains his innocence in Brown's murder, he is known to have been abusive toward his ex-wife. "Simpson was convicted in 1989 of misdemeanor spousal abuse, punching and kicking Nicole and threatening to kill her, The Los Angeles Times reported in 1994," the Fayetteville Observer writes.
