In just a short period, Olivia Rodrigo has established herself as a Gen Z cultural phenomenon. She's a multifaceted American artist who first attracted attention for her acting roles before evolving into a global music sensation. Rodrigo's acting career began in 2015 when she starred in Disney's Bizaardvark as Paige Olvera, running for three seasons. Her acting prowess then earned her the lead role of Nini Salazar-Roberts in the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (HSMTMTS) in 2019. In HSMTMTS, Rodrigo showcased her impressive vocal abilities, which served as a stepping stone to her music career.

2021 marked a significant shift in Rodrigo's career as her debut single "drivers license" took the music world by storm. This emotionally charged ballad resonated with audiences worldwide, becoming an instant chart-topper. It broke numerous records, including the most streams in a single day for a non-holiday song on Spotify, underscoring her breakthrough in the music industry. Following the success of "drivers license," Rodrigo released her debut album, Sour, in May 2021. The album, known for its raw and relatable lyrics mixed with pop, rock, and indie elements, received widespread critical acclaim and further solidified her standing as a powerful voice of her generation.

Fans love Olivia Rodrigo not just for her impressive talents, but also for her authenticity and relatability. She has been praised for her emotional transparency, and in a recent Vogue interview, she expressed her anger about the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year.

During the interview, Rodrigo brought up a previous article that the interviewer wrote about abortion, saying that it's "actually insane" that women have lost their opportunity to get an abortion in many states. "I think it's sickening," Rodrigo said. She then added that many young women in her generation will be “forced to give birth if they get pregnant.”

“It is so scary. It’s such a terrifying reality," she continued.

At a 2022 performance in Glastonbury, Rodrigo even talked about abortion on stage, shouting, "So many women and so many girls are going to die because of this."

Rodrigo is accustomed to getting political with her platform. She even spoke at the White House in 2021 to coax Gen Z into getting the coronavirus vaccine. This time, though, she wants to use her voice to talk about abortion. Strangely enough, she also told the interviewer in the same breath that she is "so excited to experience motherhood one of these days." It's something she thinks about "all the time," apparently.

Rodrigo is just one of many, many celebrities and singers who have expressed their support for abortion. Artists like Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus have done the same during live concerts in the past, shouting about how unfair it is that abortion on demand isn't made available to all women across the country. Even Demi Lovato made a song about it recently, called "Swine." It may seem like a trivial thing to bystanders, but we can't forget that these celebrities hold a lot of influence over fans, many of whom vote. Unfortunately, all of these celebrities, including Rodrigo, are spreading things about abortion that are completely false.

Olivia Rodrigo Is Spreading Misinformation About Abortion

Rodrigo says in the Vogue interview that women not being able to access abortions is "such a terrifying reality," and she made it clear in her concert that she believes women will actually die if they aren't able to end the life of their preborn child. But this is simply not true. There is never a woman who will die because she isn't able to have an abortion. High-risk pregnancies or life-threatening complications might require early delivery, but this does not equate to the intentional killing of the baby. Procedures such as dilation and curettage (D&C) may be necessary after a miscarriage, but this is aimed at preserving the mother's health, not ending a life. That's why Roe v. Wade being overturned doesn't affect pregnant women and their medical care whatsoever. There is never a medical reason to intentionally kill a baby, which means there will never, ever be a woman who is denied life-saving medical care when she is pregnant. Even in many of the state bills that detail strict abortion laws, they explain that treatment for miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy are considered exceptions to abortion, which is the intentional killing of a preborn life.

Ectopic pregnancies, where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, commonly result in confusion. Contrary to popular belief, abortion is not the medical solution for this condition. An ectopic pregnancy can lead to life-threatening complications for the mother, as the embryo cannot survive and the growing tissue may damage the mother's body. Treatment involves medication or surgery to remove the ectopic tissue. Methotrexate, a medication, can be administered if the ectopic pregnancy is detected early. In more advanced cases, laparoscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the ectopic pregnancy and repair any tissue damage. But even public health organizations declare that abortion is not the treatment for an ectopic pregnancy, so a woman with an ectopic pregnancy will never be denied care.

As for "forced birth," there is no such thing as forcing someone to give birth. You can't force a body to breathe, digest food, or give birth, as these are all natural bodily functions that happen on their own if you simply allow the body to do what it's meant to do. Pregnancy and birth are natural things that the female body does on its own; it's patently absurd to claim that not being able to abort your baby is the same as forcing a woman to give birth. It's important to note that 99.5% of abortions are elective, and only 0.5% are due to rape or incest, meaning that virtually every abortion is because the woman voluntarily chose to have sex and risk getting pregnant. Nobody is forcing them to do so.

The more these celebrities spread false information about abortion, the less informed the younger generation will be. There is nothing empowering about encouraging women to kill their own offspring. Celebrities will continue to twist the truth and make it sound like abortion is necessary and pro-women, when that couldn't be farther from the truth. It's hard to know whether they are knowingly lying to fit in with the mainstream progressive narrative or if they're willfully ignorant.
