Peru Classifies Trans People As "Mentally Ill" Following Government's Latest Decree
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte signed a decree that will classify trans people as "mentally ill."
Peru has classified trans individuals as "mentally ill."
Under the latest decree signed by the country's president and health minister, "transsexualism, dual-role transvestism, gender identity disorder in childhood, other gender identity disorders and fetishistic transvestism" will all be recorded as mental illnesses.
Peru's government argues the move will make "psychological treatment" freely available to affected individuals, stating it "categorically reaffirms respect for the dignity of the person and their free actions within the framework of human rights, providing health services for their benefit."
The decree has triggered a backlash in the country.
Peruvian LGBTQ+ activists have slammed the government's decision. Percy Mayta-Tristán, a medical researcher at Lima’s Scientific University of the South, spoke to The Telegraph, arguing that the decree lacked "awareness around the complexity of LGBTQ+ issues."
“You can’t ignore the context that this is happening in a super-conservative society, where the LGBT community has no rights and where labeling them as mentally ill opens the door to conversion therapy,” he explained.
Meanwhile, trans activist Dylan Mulvaney, who flew to Peru and detailed how he felt "safe" in the country, remains silent. Many believe that Peru is on the right side of history. @Capitalist_Mike on X writes, "Peru siding with psychiatric science, not social pressure. This is the way."
