Few toys capture the magic of childhood quite like Polly Pocket. A staple of many 90s kids' toy boxes, this iconic Mattel product is now set to follow in Barbie's successful footsteps, leaping from our nostalgic memories to the silver screen. Helmed by Girls' creator Lena Dunham, the upcoming Polly Pocket movie is touted to be an enchanting, engaging, and empowering project starring Lily Collins.

Initial announcement of the film back in 2021 sparked a wave of excitement among fans of the miniature doll. With over 45 Mattel movies reportedly in the pipeline, including Barney, Hot Wheels, and Uno, this cinematic journey promises to be just the beginning of a nostalgic wave of childhood revival.

Unlike the sociocultural exploration seen in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie or the surrealistic spin planned for Daniel Kaluuya’s Barney film, the Polly Pocket movie aims to focus on a unique bond between a young girl and a pocket-sized woman. Dunham aims to create a “smart playful” film that engages young women without resorting to condescension.

"Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me–Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate," said Dunham, reflecting on her own childhood experiences. Dunham is thrilled to explore these themes of autonomy and imagination as a director, creating a movie that reflects her deep-seated belief in producing smart, playful films for young women.

While specific details remain under wraps, Dunham has dropped tantalizing hints about the film's direction. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in October 2022, she revealed the movie would play with the concept of a small individual navigating a vast world. True to the original toy's design, Collins’ Polly will be really small, a nod to the teensy tiny ’90s version of the doll.

As of now, Collins, known for her work in Emily in Paris, is the only confirmed member of the cast. Besides playing the titular role, Collins will also serve as a producer. She expressed her excitement about the project, sharing that as a former Polly Pocket fan, bringing these tiny toys to the big screen is a "real dream come true".

The film's production team comprises Robbie Brenner and Kevin McKeon of Mattel Films, Sandino Moya-Smith and Winnie Carrillo of MGM, and Liz Watson and Michael P. Cohen from Dunham’s company, Good Thing Going.

As for the release date, fans will have to wait a bit longer for a definitive answer. With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes still ongoing, Hollywood productions remain largely on hold. That said, the Polly Pocket script is reportedly complete and has received positive feedback. Brenner, a producer from Mattel Films, is optimistic about future production plans, promising that the movie will hopefully go into production at some point in the future.

Pretty much any millennial woman can remember playing with Polly Pocket when they were young. There was something magical and imaginative about the tiny, little worlds of Polly Pocket—but many fans are concerned about Dunham being at the helm of this movie. She may be one of the most insufferable feminists of her time, who is always desperate to push back against the imaginary patriarchy and produce stories that strip women of all femininity and traditionalism. Although many millennial women watched Girls, there were plenty of scenes (particularly sex scenes) that left viewers perplexed and even disgusted. And you might as well prepare yourself for the inevitable Polly Pocket abortion storyline.
