Pretty much every millennial grew up with Raven-Symoné, who began her career as a child actor on The Cosby Show before gaining prominence as the star of Disney Channel's That's So Raven. She also was a co-host on The View and took on numerous film roles and voice acting projects, including Disney's The Cheetah Girls series and Kim Possible. Additionally, Raven-Symoné has a notable music career, releasing several albums and singles. She opened up recently about her health struggles that were related directly to her body image insecurities.

Raven-Symoné Reveals She Had 2 Breast Reductions and Liposuction Before Turning 18

Disney Channel celebrity Raven-Symoné recently disclosed on The Best Podcast Ever With Raven and Miranda that she underwent two breast reduction surgeries and liposuction before reaching the age of 18. She made this revelation to the audience alongside her wife and podcast co-host, Miranda Pearman-Maday. The decision for these procedures came after her father's suggestion to undergo breast reduction. Raven-Symoné further shared her hope that liposuction might alleviate criticisms of her weight. Despite her public persona, these surgical interventions had remained private until now.

Reflecting on her early surgeries, Raven-Symoné described the experience as a "mess" due to the associated pain of undergoing such procedures at a young age. Before her surgeries, the star experienced significant back pain, and without support, her breasts would droop significantly. Post-surgery complications included a seizure she experienced upon waking from her first surgery. Although the recovery was somewhat painful, with scars persisting to this day, what was more challenging was the criticism she continued to face. After the initial breast reduction, she gained weight and required another procedure.

Raven-Symoné's surgery did little to shield her from public scrutiny. Even after her procedures, she faced criticism on social media platforms for her weight. Adding to the complexity of her situation, she shared that liposuction did not have the desired effect due to a hormone imbalance, which meant she would still gain weight. One key insight she wants others to gain from her experience is the importance of self-acceptance and considering therapy before deciding on surgical interventions. Raven-Symoné emphasized living with your body issues for a while before deciding on permanent changes.

The issue of body image is not new for Raven-Symoné. She has been vocal about her struggles with body image criticism since her childhood. In 2022, during an appearance on The View, Raven-Symoné shared her weight-loss journey. She managed to lose 40 pounds, going from 210 to 170 pounds, without exercising. Instead, she adopted a diet rich in whole foods, keto-friendly snacks, and practiced intermittent and extended fasting.

This weight loss journey, as she pointed out, was inspired by her desire to lead a healthier life for her wife. During a doctor's visit, Raven-Symoné was confronted with health statistics that were alarming for someone of her age. With her wife's support, Raven-Symoné embarked on a journey to eliminate sugar from her diet, acknowledging its addictive nature, especially as she was consuming it in various forms.

Raven-Symoné certainly isn't the only one to open up about issues like this. Many celebrities, once celebrated for their flawless appearances, have come forward to share the darker side of the aesthetic pressures they faced in the limelight. These narratives often revolve around premature decisions to undergo procedures like liposuction or breast surgeries, spurred by the relentless scrutiny of the media and the public.

For instance, reality star Heidi Montag famously underwent 10 cosmetic surgeries in one day, including a breast augmentation. Years later, she expressed deep regret, citing health issues and body dysmorphia. Similarly, actress Tara Reid publicly discussed her liposuction and breast augmentation regrets, highlighting the complications that tarnished her career for a time. Singer and actress K. Michelle has been candid about her health battles stemming from silicone injections in her buttocks. The series of surgeries to correct the complications and the pain she experienced served as cautionary tales for many. Blac Chyna, known for being the father of Rob Kardashian's child, has recently shared with the world her journey to remove her butt injections and clear her body of some of the procedures that were done to enhance it.

We're seeing a turn in the tide. More women than ever are coming forward to discuss the downsides of getting work done at such a young age, encouraging others to either hold off as long as they can or simply be content with the body that they were given. Unfortunately, the height of social media can make many women compare themselves to one another, which can result in pressure to look a certain way. Thankfully, there seems to be a countercultural movement of celebrities and influencers promoting a more natural lifestyle that will have much better long-term results for women everywhere.
