If you thought Sabrina Carpenter’s most devastating lyrics were about a bad breakup, think again. In a recent Vogue interview, the 25-year-old pop sensation opened up about the true inspiration behind Emails I Can’t Send – and it has absolutely nothing to do with an ex. It’s about her father.
"Thanks to you, I can’t love right." That’s the painful lyric that represents how the singer feels about her dad. Carpenter confirmed that the title track of her 2022 album was written about her dad’s infidelity. “You disgust me / Don’t make me cuss you out,” she sings.
There’s more: “I get nice guys and villainize them / Read their texts like they're having sex right now / Scared I'll find out that it's true / And if I do, then I blame you for / Every worst that I assume.” She sings toward the end that there’s no way she’d find forgiveness as fast as her mother did. “And, God, I love you, but you're such a dipsh*t / Please f*cking fix this.”
The lyrics are indeed brutal, but you have to put yourself in Carpenter’s sparkly boots – or any young person’s shoes, really. Carpenter seems really close to her family, and it’s likely that she trusted and looked up to her father. His infidelity not only affected her mom but also her and her siblings. Most people’s first introduction to and foundation for romantic relationships come from their parents. His cheating impacted her so deeply that now she can’t help but fear other men will do the same to her.
The question is, how did her dad find out she had turned their sour family history into a song? "Sure as hell did not play it for him in person," she admitted. She sent it to her mom first. “There were definitely feelings involved. But you birthed me, so you kind of have to deal with the repercussions.”
