Taylor Swift on Climate Change
Taylor Swift has been vocal about climate change in the past. In 2020, she opened up about her song "Only the Young" and discussed the creative inspiration behind it, revealing that she wrote the tune after the midterm elections when she was left disappointed by the results. "It was hard to see so many people feel like they had canvassed and done everything and tried so hard. I saw a lot of young people’s hopes dashed," she tells Variety. "And I found that to be particularly tragic, because young people are the people who feel the worst effects of gun violence and student loans and trying to figure out how to start their lives and how to pay their bills and climate change and are we going to war — all these horrific situations that we find ourselves facing right now."
It's nice that the "Karma" singer used her platform to voice her concerns...but does she really care about climate change? This is a valid question because Swift's average flight time is 80 minutes, and Yard has even studied celebrities and their carbon footprints. The results? Swift took the crown as queen of CO2e polluter in 2022, amassing 22,923 minutes in the air and 170 flights since January of the same year. This was her not on tour.
Oh, but wait – according to a spokesperson for Swift, “Taylor’s jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals," and "To attribute most or all of these trips to her is blatantly incorrect.” Many people didn't buy that, though, and the Google search results for "Taylor Swift private jets" showed that lots of websites didn't either. There were numerous articles on the pop star's jet usage and her alleged pollution.
Taylor Swift Attends New York Jets Game
Swift has done a pretty great job of maintaining her image. Is it possible that she attended a Jets game to muddy the search engine so that when you look up "Taylor Swift jets," you don't get articles about her carbon footprint? Brittney Muller, an international SEO consultant, believes this could be the case. "A PR Masterclasses 🤌," she writes on X. "Taylor Swift attended the Jets game as a strategic SEO play to bury her jet emissions stories. 🤯 Genius."
Muller even added some receipts to support her theory. One comment on TikTok noted how the news announced Swift is "traveling on the plane with the chiefs" when she usually opts for her private jet when trying to reach a destination. And, funny enough, one of the first articles on Travis Kelce, Swift, and the Jets was written by a writer who covers the Jets and the NFL. Inside job, maybe?!
The Daily Mail corroborates this theory. In their article about her and Kelce, they conveniently added how "Taylor opted to rent a Hawker Beechcraft 4000 for her journey back east, instead of taking one of the two jets she owns." Interesting. Muller also added how the private jet articles won't disappear but are buried by the coverage of the Jets game.
However, the SEO speculations have gone so viral that when you look up "Taylor Swift jets," you'll come across articles similar to this one. Did the PR plan fail? Even if it did, I guess Swift is a mastermind after all.
