Taylor Swift Drops TTPD Albums As Charli XCX Nears UK #1 With "Brat"
Taylor Swift is accused of sabotaging other female artists' wins, including Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, and Billie Eilish.
Taylor Swift is facing backlash for releasing a different version of The Tortured Poets Department every time another female artist releases a new song or album. So far, the "Fortnight" singer has already released 34 versions of TTPD.
That's right – not one, two, or three, but 34 alternative editions of the work she released just a couple of months ago. Some say she's a genius. Others are calling her greedy.
More recently, Swift released UK-exclusive digital variants of her album that include bonus tracks and first draft phone memos – just after Charli XCX was about to reach #1 on the UK charts. Charli had just debuted Brat, now one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2024. The question is, did Swift release the new variants on purpose to steal the spotlight? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Either way, some fans believe that Swift is genuinely trying to sabotage Charli.
"Taylor Swift is releasing new versions of her snoozefest album only in the UK because Charli is predicted to go #1 there..." wrote @ctrlpetal on X/Twitter. The user proceeded to call Swift a "b*tch," "psycho," and "the cancer of the music industry" who is "fame-hungry and stats-obsessed."
"I didn’t wanna believe it but… Taylor could actually be chart obsessed…" said @Captivating_BB.
@harleyskooky tweeted, "34 different versions of an album to block any and everyone from that #1 spot is insane. the pop girls need to unionize."
This is not the first time Swift has faced allegations of sabotaging other women. One day before Billie Eilish released her latest record, Hit Me Hard and Soft, TTPD variants were released, with each edition including bonus versions of one of three of Swift's songs. Swift again was accused of "sabotaging" Sabrina Carpenter when "Espresso" had a chance to hit number one.
The conversation about Charli and Swift also went on on Reddit, with one user writing that Swift "has the type of greed they talk about in the bible."
Despite the backlash, Swift continues to set a new UK albums chart record during her Eras Tour, with TTPD securing a sixth non-consecutive week at number one, surpassing the five weeks achieved by Midnights in 2022 and 2023, according to the Official Charts Company.
Brat received an 8.6 on Pitchfork, a 95 on Metacritic and has been ranked #1 album of 2024 by the site.
