The Brutal Persecution Of Christians In Syria Is Escalating

A silent slaughter of Christians in Syria is taking place—why is no one talking about it?

For over 2,000 years, Syria has been home to one of the world’s oldest Christian communities. But today, that community is being wiped out. Churches are bombed, homes are raided, families are forced to flee, and those who stay behind often face brutal violence.

Before the war started in 2011, about 1.5 million Christians lived in Syria. Now, fewer than 300,000 remain. Some were killed. Many fled. And those still there are fighting for survival in a country that seems to have turned against them.

The worst part? The world barely notices.

A Faith Under Fire

When Syria’s civil war broke out, Christians found themselves trapped. The Assad government, Islamist rebel groups, and later, ISIS, all played a role in their suffering. But nothing compared to the horrors brought by jihadist groups like ISIS.

In 2015, ISIS raided over 30 Christian villages along the Khabur River. They kidnapped entire families, destroyed churches, and executed those who refused to convert. Some were ransomed, others were never seen again.

Even now, long after ISIS lost power, Christians are still not safe. Churches continue to be attacked. Armed groups loot Christian homes. And in some areas, radical Islamist fighters openly threaten Christian families, telling them to leave or die.

The latest threat came after the fall of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. While some hoped for a better future, Christians saw familiar dangers return. In some towns, militants celebrated by burning Christian homes and even torching a Christmas tree in the streets.

If this were happening to any other religious group, the response would be massive. Politicians would condemn it. News outlets would cover it. Social media would explode with hashtags and calls for justice. But when Christians are slaughtered, the silence is deafening.

Western leaders, who often speak up for human rights, barely mention the ongoing persecution. The mainstream media reports on the war in Syria but largely ignores the suffering of Christians. Even churches in the West have been slow to act.

Syria’s Christians don’t want to leave their homeland. They’ve been there for thousands of years. But unless the world wakes up, there may soon be none left.

How You Can Help

It’s easy to feel powerless when reading about something so tragic. But there are ways to help.

Raise Awareness: Talk about it. Share articles. Post on social media. The more people know, the harder it is for the world to ignore.

Support Organizations Helping Persecuted Christians: Groups like Open Doors provide food, shelter, and legal help to persecuted Christians in Syria.

Pressure Leaders to Act: Call or email your representatives. Ask them to advocate for Christian refugees and push for policies that protect religious minorities in Syria.

Pray and Encourage Your Church to Get Involved: Many churches don’t realize how bad the persecution is. Bring it up. Ask your church leaders to support efforts to help Syrian Christians.
