Netflix's newest thriller starring Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke seems to be sending a "warning" to viewers.

According to the synopsis for Leave the World Behind, people's lives are suddenly interrupted by a cyber attack: “A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a blackout. As the threat grows, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world.”

The weird thing is that Barack and Michelle Obama were involved in the production of the film. Director Sam Esmail explained that the former president gave his expertise on how a crisis would actually unfold. "In the original drafts of the script, I definitely pushed things a lot farther than they were in the film, and President Obama, having the experience he does have, was able to ground me a little bit on how things might unfold in reality," Esmail told Vanity Fair.

He continued, "I am writing what I think is fiction, for the most part, I’m trying to keep it as true to life as possible, but I’m exaggerating and dramatizing. And to hear an ex-president say you’re off by a few details…I thought I was off by a lot! The fact that he said that scared the f*ck out of me.”

People believe this film is a "warning" of a cyber attack soon to come. Esmail even suggests that we should act soon. "And we shouldn’t wait around until the catastrophe happens—the work begins now. I think [Obama] would say the same thing," he said. Well, that's ominous.

Is it possible that a blackout could occur during our timeline? Maybe it wouldn't be far-fetched to think so. Before the pandemic, the World Economic Forum and The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security hosted Event 201, a live high-level pandemic simulation. The WEF then held a cyber pandemic simulation in July 2021. If history repeats itself, can we expect a cyber attack soon?

Plenty of viewers think so. TikTokers state that the movie has a very "predictive programming" feel to the movie. "Essentially, the movie is about the downfall of civilization and how it's done in three steps," said a woman who goes by Shipwreck. "First step being that the government is going to be toppled from within. Next one [is] that it's going to be littered with disinformation and misinformation to confuse the masses and to create chaos." Sounds like we're all going through these steps already.

She continued, "The first step, if the first and second steps are done correctly, is going to cause basically a civil war, causing the paranoid and problematic to start turning on each other."

Dutch commentator Eva Vlaardingerbroek writes, "Leave The World Behind is a new Netflix special produced by the Obamas about cyber attacks and a 'global communications breakdown.'" She shared a video of the trailer and a video by WEF discussing Covid-like cyber attacks. "Watch this, then watch the video the WEF posted a few years ago warning about a future ‘cyber pandemic’ and tell me we’re not being programmed," she added.

I guess now is a great time to invest in backup generators, stock up on food, and hope for the best.
