"The Office" Is Reportedly Getting Rebooted, And Fans Are Not Happy: "We Don't Want It"
"The Office" may get a reboot, but fans are not too eager about it.
Who is asking for all of these remakes? Popular TV series The Office is a mockumentary created by British comedians Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. It first aired in the U.K. over two decades ago, and the American version later premiered in 2005. The awkward yet hilarious sitcom has since been remade in numerous countries, including France, Finland, Sweden, and Germany, and a female-led version is currently being made in Australia.
It's been over 9 years since NBC's The Office ended, but according to Puck News, the show may be getting a reboot. Writers Jonathan Handel and Matthew Belloni theorize that the original showrunner, Greg Daniels, will make a return to the series. what “Greg Daniels is set to do a reboot of The Office, for instance. Disney’s Dana Walden will finally be able to announce the return of her BFF Ryan Murphy from Netflix. A ton of high-profile movie scripts will come in. The industry will chug back to normal," they explained.
When speaking to Collider about a potential spinoff in 2022, Daniels said, “I can’t tell whether fans would want more of it, and when I say more of it, I don’t think it would be the same characters.”
He adds, “I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way [The] Mandalorian is like an extension of Star Wars. But I don’t know if that would be something people would want or not, it’s hard to tell.”
You would think this rumor would excite the fandom, but it seems the majority is rather unimpressed. "Original cast or we don’t want it," wrote @9illeh on X, to which @elsiebunny responded, "Nah, just leave it alone. Last episode was released 10 years ago and Steve Carell already said no and he was the soul of the series."
"i swear if they wokeify the office imma lose it," added @wizzyknows.
@JayThyself thinks there's a chance political correctness could get in the way of the script. "It won’t be the same that kind of humor is frowned upon now," he said.
There's a growing sentiment that the trend of remaking beloved classics is becoming tiresome. The Office is already so iconic and well-loved that it doesn't require a reboot. The fans are worried that attempts to recreate the original's charm may fall short or, worse, dilute the nature of what made the show special. The desire for something fresh and original in the entertainment world is palpable, especially since Disney has been bombarding its viewers with constant remakes. Let's not forget that the humor and themes of the past may not align with today's cultural sensitivities. But maybe there's no need to worry. Given the long-standing success of The Office, Daniels will likely do the spinoff or reboot justice.
