It’s been 20 years since Mel Gibson and Jim Caviezel gave us the heart-wrenching hit The Passion of the Christ. After two decades of anticipation and rumors, its sequel, The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, has been confirmed.

Recently, Collider reported that the Italian news agency Italpress revealed Mel Gibson is currently in Malta, scouting stunning locations for the upcoming film. "The visit is part of a five-day trip that will involve meetings with government officials on the Mediterranean island," wrote the outlet. "The sequel is expected to begin production in early 2025, following Gibson's promotional tour for his upcoming action thriller Flight Risk, which is set to premiere in January."

Gibson has been said to have fine-tuned the script over the years and collaborated with co-writer Randall Wallace, who previously earned an Oscar nomination for Braveheart. They’ve reportedly crafted six drafts, and Wallace recently announced that the screenplay has finally been completed. While the plot remains largely under wraps, there are hints that Resurrection will explore more spiritual and metaphysical themes compared to its predecessor.

The release date has not yet been confirmed, and according to Gibson's publicist Alan Nierob, they're still in the early stages. “All we can confirm is they were scouting locations recently,” Nierob told Variety in an email, adding that there's “not a lot to discuss at this early stage.”

What can we expect from The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection? In a revealing 2022 interview, Gibson shared his ambitious vision for the film: "It’s not a linear narrative... you have to juxtapose the central event that I’m trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past, and in other realms."

Gibson described the project as an "acid trip," indicating that the film will likely focus more on the supernatural.

Meanwhile, Mel Gibson’s latest directorial project, the suspense thriller Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg, will open in U.S. theaters on January 24.
