The growing number of female solo travelers is a testament to women's thirst for new and exciting experiences – just open up TikTok or Instagram, and you'll come across adventuresses showcasing their global escapades. Their videos have influenced many to go sightseeing, learn about different cultures, and expand their horizons. Still, it's crucial to acknowledge that certain countries present higher safety risks than others – despite how heavily toured they are. London, for example, is one of the most visited cities in the world, attracting 19.2 million international travelers annually. Yet in 2021, Redfield & Wilton Strategies found that 49% of Londoners felt their city is becoming more unsafe.

Not all popular destinations are dangerous, but women should familiarize themselves with countries suitable for them as solo nomads. This list is determined largely by the Global Peace Index (GPI), which ranks independent countries and territories by their level of peacefulness.  I’ll also include each estimated monthly living cost for each country, an aspect that I feel is important to many travelers on a budget.

Nevertheless, here are my top choices for female travelers!

Vietnam

GPI rank: 44

Cost of living: $500 – $800

Vietnam may seem high up on the list, but no worries, it’s still in the green. Violent crime is still rare in this popular destination, even in the biggest cities. Petty thefts exist, but keep your wits about you and they're easily avoidable. The country's natural landscapes, refreshing cuisines, and affordable rent attract solo travelers and digital nomads globally.

If you want to lose weight while enjoying your surroundings, spend a couple of weeks in Vietnam! Vietnam is ranked very high among countries for thinness due to the residents' physical activity and healthy diets.

Taiwan

GPI rank: 30

Cost of living: $1,000

If you’re a foodie, head to Taiwan. Taipei’s night markets are bustling with people, and long streets full of food vendors selling fried foods, hot noodles, grilled meat, and desserts. Taiwan is home to several natural wonders as well, including the Taroko National Park and Sun Moon Lake. Like many places in Asia, the outskirts are comprised of locals who hardly speak English, making it much more difficult to get around.

Croatia

GPI rank: 15

Monthly living expenses:  €1,384

I love everything about Croatia: the people, weather, beaches, mountains, the food. Don’t even let me get started on the food. I would say that Croatia is definitely not underrated, and a growing number of people are visiting its coastal cities (and its capital, Zagreb) each year. Dubrovnik remains a heavily-toured destination thanks to its jaw-dropping location and enchanting Old Town, with Split at number two. The buses and trains (I would recommend buses) are easily accessible and affordable for backpackers. I’ve witnessed many solo travelers from around the world visit Croatia’s cities, and I can comfortably walk around at night in the city without fear.

Japan

GPI rank: 10

Cost of living: $1,687 – $2,697

Most people know that Japan's cost of living is high due to its fairly remote location and import costs (there are obviously more factors than this).  Still, it goes without saying that Japan is one of the safest countries in Asia. There are also several ways you can save. You can opt for hostels or capsule hotels (unless you're claustrophobic), microwaveable meals, and rail passes for transportation.

Hungary

GPI rank: 9

Monthly living expenses: $674 – without rent.

On average, the cost of living in Hungary is 39% lower than in the U.S., making it one of the more affordable countries to visit. Its capital, Budapest, welcomes millions of solo travelers each year, for obvious reasons: the amazing spas and thermal baths, art museums, and the neo-gothic architecture. Additionally, the 2023 Cost of Living Survey has ranked Budapest 161st out of 227 cities, solidifying its affordability for budget-conscious solo travelers.

Slovenia

GPI rank: 7

Monthly living expenses: €1,550

Slovenia is not exactly “expensive” by U.S. standards, but it is more expensive than some of the other Eastern European countries. Still, Slovenia is home to some of the most stunning hiking – and skiing –  spots, delicious cuisines, and gorgeous cities. You may not be too familiar with Slovenia, but you may have seen one of its most famous locations on Instagram before. Lake Bled, located in the Julian Alps, is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

Iceland

GPI rank: 1

Monthly living expenses: $1,250 (170,688kr) – without rent.

There’s a reason why Iceland remains #1 on the Global Peace Index. Situated between the Greenland Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, Iceland is a nature lover's paradise. With its extremely low crime rate, safe roads, and strong community, this country is easily one of the best destinations for female travelers. There is a caveat, though – the cost of living.

I had an amazing time in Iceland. The green pastures, beautiful landscapes, and stunning waterfalls sparked my interest in traveling the world. But I had only turned 20 and spent the past couple of years paying off my college classes, so my meals consisted of store-bought meat, cheeses, and bread for sandwiches. I tried my best to save money, but I had the misfortune of a rock hitting the windshield of my rental car. That small crack cost an additional $1,000. The lesson? Get insurance on your rental car, even if it costs hundreds of dollars.

Closing Thoughts

This should go without saying, but it's still crucial for women to remain vigilant and maintain awareness of their surroundings even when navigating the safest locations. While these countries may generally be safe, it's important to acknowledge that no destination is entirely free from potential risks. Prioritizing personal safety and taking proactive measures should be the priority to ensure a smooth and memorable trip!
