Eugenia Cooney, 29, has been a figure of controversy for over a decade. The social media personality began her online presence in 2011 by livestreaming on YouNow. That same year, she created her YouTube channel to vlog about her life, cosplay, and create makeup tutorials. She started streaming on Twitch in 2018 and has amassed over 400,000 followers.

Cooney's followers first voiced concerns over her thin frame in 2015, allegedly due to anorexia nervosa. In 2019, Cooney posted an update on X (formerly Twitter) to tell her fans she was taking a break from social media. Many speculated that she was working on her purported condition. Months later, YouTuber Shane Dawson released a documentary titled The Return of Eugenia Cooney, where the influencer finally confirmed having an eating disorder and chronicled her recovery.

The hour-long video discusses the worries behind Cooney's online presence and how her content may influence her younger audience. Despite seeming healthier after the documentary, Cooney appeared to relapse shortly after.

Fans Are More Worried Than Ever Before

In the past couple of months, Cooney has consistently become a topic of conversation. According to fans, Cooney looks worse than ever before. The influencer uploaded a video of herself this week dancing to "Single Ladies" – but her audience is not buying the happy persona, and a lot of them are predicting her demise. "The news stations are picking up on her now," @madeline_lessard says on Instagram. "When she dies, a documentary will be created on how no one saved her. People will be in an uproar, sign petitions to have her mother thrown in jail, and she will be for abuse and neglect. And then Instagram, YT, Twitch, etc. will also probably all take a hit for allowing this to happen in the public eye."

For context, viewers believe Cooney's mom isn't concerned about her daughter's health. In one livestream, the YouTuber's mother claims Cooney "eats" and "takes good care of herself."

@xxkatiemay writes, "Theres nothing that can be done at this point. This is the worst we have EVER seen her. Although she clearly has chronic long term health problems already thats not what is going to kill her it will be her heart and seeing her atm her pale grey anaemic skin it wont be long. As a nurse I know her blood work will be TERRIBLE."

Others assume that Cooney is continuously making content for people fetishizing anorexia. "This seems like fetish content at this point. Idk how your videos are still allowed on these platforms," says @brittney.a.brown. "This is extremely disturbing."

A man on TikTok named Anthony adds, "This is so sad and heartbreaking to see this."

A woman on YouTube (Of Herbs and Altars) created a video about her thoughts on the recent uproar on Cooney. Based on her past experiences with people who had eating disorders, the hysteria in Cooney's comment section offers little to no help. "An anorexic person will see this hysteria and often will not take it as a wake-up call, but as a compliment," she explains, "because it's a confirmation that they really are that thin, that sick."

It has been incredibly sad to see Cooney's physical and emotional state deteriorate all these years. Regardless of the real concerns her fans have, and the glaring warning signs of her deteriorating health, it seems to me that Cooney may never seek help. As observers, we're nearly powerless, and it's up to her to get better. Let's hope her fans' heartfelt pleas reach her, and that she'll finally find her way to recovery.
