Victoria Justice Felt "Uncomfortable" Filming Sex Scene For "Depravity" On First Day Of Filming
"I was like, 'I don’t know if I should do this,'" Victoria Justice recalled. "There’s a bunch of random dudes in the room breathing and watching you."
Are intense sex scenes really necessary to the plot?
Victorious star Victoria Justice said that she was required to film a sex scene in Depravity on her first day of filming. She remembered feeling "uncomfortable," and in a room with random men watching you perform sexual acts, who wouldn't be?
“My first day on set I had my first ever sex scene. I’m like, ‘Really, guys? We’re gonna schedule this for the first day? Cool. Thanks for that,'” Justice said on SiriusXM’s Hits 1 LA with Tony Fly and Symon. “It is uncomfortable. I was actually very nervous about it and totally anxious about the entire situation, and I was like, ‘Did I make the wrong choice? I don’t know if I should do this.'”
Luckily, Justice felt safe with her director, an experience that not every celebrity has in Hollywood. The actress says she "had a lot of faith and trust in our director,” adding, “He made me feel very comfortable about it and said, ‘Listen, I’ll show it to you beforehand. If you don’t like it, then we’ll change it.'”
“I think sometimes people think filming sex scenes or anything like an intimate scene that it’s really sexy…it’s really not," Justice explains. "It’s uncomfortable, honestly, and there’s a bunch of random dudes in the room breathing and watching you. The actor I was working with, we were friends as much as we could be. We barely knew each other because it was the first day of filming. He was a super nice guy and made me feel safe and was very polite and respectful.”
Nevertheless, Justice says filming “went well,” and the sex scene turned out “very tasteful.” Her opening up about her experience brought up an interesting discussion on sex scenes over at X (formerly Twitter), with many agreeing that there's no need for them. "no more sex scenes. actors hate doing them," wrote media personality Mary Morgan. "audiences don’t want to watch them. WHY is pornography in every tv show and movie now?"
"Sex scenes have always made me uncomfortable and I look away. I don’t think anyone really wants to watch them, it’s awkward and usually not an important part of the plot," shares model Michelle Ivana. "Unless something happens during the sex that is integral to the plot (rare), It would be just as good of a story line if the sex was implied like they did in old movies. Just fade the scene out or pan away into the distance and then get on with the story."
Even some of the most famous celebrities dislike filming sex scenes, including Henry Cavill. "There are actually circumstances where a sex scene is beneficial to a movie, but I think sometimes they’re just overused these days," he said in an interview with Matthew Vaughn. "I think it’s when you get that sense of, is this really necessary, or is it just people with less clothing on?"
You's Penn Badgley approached the show's creator and requested to no longer shoot intimate scenes. "Fidelity in every relationship — especially in a marriage — is important to me," he said. "It got to a point where [I thought], 'I don't want to do that,' so I said to Sera, like, 'My desire would be zero [intimate scenes], to go from 100 to zero.'"
Recent findings by the Center for Scholars and Storytellers at UCLA found that adolescents wanted less on-screen sex and trauma. As celebs increasingly shy away from getting naked on screen, there's a parallel trend among younger audiences: a growing appetite for content that resonates with their lives, without the pornified scenes. We've grown weary of the saturation of trauma-heavy shows like Euphoria. We want movies that provide good entertainment or comfort for a change, without unnecessary nudity.
