Was Hugh Grant Rude To Ashley Graham On The Oscars Red Carpet? The Internet Certainly Thinks So

Last year at the Academy Awards, the whole world was shocked to see Will Smith slap Chris Rock on live television after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith while he was presenting for an award. It was all anyone could talk about the following day. This year, the Oscars red carpet showed some truly beautiful dresses, such as Angela Bassett's purple show stopper and Ana de Armas' simple but stunning nude, sequined dress. But there was an awkward moment that the internet couldn't get over: a red carpet interview between Ashley Graham and Hugh Grant.

Was Hugh Grant Rude to Ashley Graham on the Oscars Red Carpet?

Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Graham, and other celebrities interviewed various actors, producers, and directors on the red carpet as everyone filed into the Academy Awards event. One interview in particular went viral in which model Ashley Graham asked Hugh Grant a few questions. She kicked off the exchange by saying that he was a veteran to the Oscars, and right away he seemed disinterested. He kind of scoffed at the comment, but she kept going anyway.

"What's your favorite thing about coming to the Oscars?" she asked him.

"Uh... uh...," he said, stalling. He finally said, "It's fascinating. The whole of humanity is here. It's vanity fair."

Ashley tried to quip back with a comment about how the Vanity Fair after party, hosted by the well-known magazine, is the place where everyone lets loose. It was an unfortunate miscommunication, as Hugh was clearly not talking about the magazine get-together. Then she asked him which designer he was wearing, which is a very standard question when you're on the red carpet at a major award show.

"Just my suit," Hugh answered flatly. "I can't remember. My tailor."

She tried to keep the conversation going and gave a "shoutout" to his tailor. Ashley then asked him if he had fun acting in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, but his answer once again was flat and lacking any enthusiasm whatsoever.

"Well I'm barely in it," he answers. "I'm in it for about three seconds."

"Well, you showed up and had fun, right?" Ashely replied, trying desperately to bring some life to the conversation.

"Uh, almost," he said.

At that point, Ashley ended the interview with a smile, but it was clear that she was uncomfortable, just like every other person watching the stiff exchange. Some users shared screenshots of Grant's face as he walked away, raising his eyebrows either in disbelief or annoyance (or perhaps both).

Many of the comments on social media show that people found Hugh to be a jerk. "Hugh Grant is such a jerk at #Oscar — She was promoting HIM and his work and, in response, Grant was rude and dismissive. Like it’s so hard being rich and famous," someone responded to the interview.

"Hugh Grant is the biggest D bag for this interview. Hugh, If you don't want to be there go home. Worst Oscars interviews ever," someone else tweeted.

However, there were many comments about how Ashley asked silly questions and also completely missed Hugh's "vanity fair" reference. He wasn't talking about the magazine; he was referring to the true definition of vanity fair, which is "a scene or place characterized by frivolity and ostentation."

"That partially dressed woman obviously had no idea he was referencing Thackeray’s novel, Vanity Fair," someone else commented.

"The moment he called the Oscars Vanity Fair and she thought he meant the after party, the interview was over," another person wrote.

"Maybe send an interviewer that can actually understand the answers," someone said.

Much of the internet has decided that even if Ashley didn't catch the vanity fair reference and asked silly questions, Hugh didn't have to act quite like that at the Oscars.
